Coloured sealant across Edinburgh: what to expect
Architects, designers and brand teams often specify the sealant colour as carefully as the finishes around it. Most sealant types are made in a broad range of standard colours, and we will confirm the colours available for the specified product at quote stage. We don’t promise an exact custom match, but we will show you the closest options. Most enquiries involve a run of joints in mismatched shades and poorly tooled joints on visible finishes, across cladding panels, hotel bathrooms and public areas and shop-fit joinery and counters.
We follow your site rules from the start: sign-in, induction and whatever permit system the building uses. With the paperwork done, we take the joints in the sequence agreed with you.
- The sealant type is chosen for the joint first, then the colour.
- We compare your RAL reference or sample with the colours made for that sealant.
- Where colour is critical, a sample bead can be agreed in a discreet spot.
- We take out the existing bead, clean the joints and fit backing.
- We apply the agreed colour and tool it neatly, with masking where the finish needs it.
What affects the price in Edinburgh
Whether it’s a single area or a whole estate, the same things set the price: what’s in scope, how we reach it, what’s specified and when it needs doing. Call for a quote and we will put a fixed figure on it.
Why appoint us

Coloured sealant across Edinburgh: the area picture
Shop fits, office refurbishments and hotel refits in towns such as Leith, Bonnington and Greenside all leave joints that need sealing. Visible joints call for a matched colour and a clean tooled finish.
The west of Scotland is wetter than the east, but external sealing anywhere in Scotland needs a dry joint and the right temperature, with a little give in the programme for wet or frosty days. Along the coast in Edinburgh, hospitality buildings tend to be busiest in the summer months, which makes the quieter months a good time for sealant work.
Edinburgh: In hotels such as DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel Edinburgh City Centre (under half a mile north-east of Edinburgh), refurbishments usually mean bathroom, bar and reception joints where a matched sealant colour has to sit with the finishes. Trade counters and showrooms on estates such as Russell Road Industrial Estate (to the west of Edinburgh) need neat joints where customers see them.
General trades versus a specialist
The visible bead is only part of the job. Backing rod, primer where specified and a joint designed to move with the building are where general trades tend to cut corners.
Site maintenance staff can often handle a short internal joint. The usual problems come from preparation: new sealant over old, damp or dusty faces, or the wrong product for the movement.
Looking after the joints
Cleaning and maintenance staff play a part too. Share these points with them:
- Record the product and colour reference on the building file
- Check a trial length in real light
- Keep the same sealant colour across a brand
- Ask contractors to check the colour before resealing
Check visible joints during routine inspections. Watch for cracks, peeling or discolouration and deal with problems early.
Ask for a trial bead on high-profile areas. A sample in real light shows how it will look.
Common problems we fix in Edinburgh
Most enquiries start with a joint that looks wrong: a pale bead on a dark frame, or an old seal that has discoloured. Replacing it with a suitable colour restores the intended look.
What tends to prompt an enquiry:
- White or grey sealant that clashes with the finish
- Colour changes after a rebrand or refit
- Failed coloured sealant that has split or peeled
- Dirty, discoloured joints in public areas
What happens if it’s left?
Leaving a failed coloured joint risks more than appearance. Water through a split seal can stain or damage the surfaces next to it.
Questions to ask before you book
- Which product they’ll use, and why it suits the joint
- What level of public liability insurance do they hold?
- Will RAMS and insurance details be available?
- Will failed sealant be removed rather than covered?
For managing agents and facilities managers
Facilities managers want contractors who arrive with the paperwork sorted. Tell us what site paperwork you need, such as RAMS, an insurance certificate or CSCS details, and we will confirm with the quote.
When you manage a building on behalf of an owner, you need clear quotes and clear reporting. We quote a fixed sum, confirm the scope and walk the finished work with you or your representative.
FAQs: Edinburgh
Do your applicators hold CSCS cards?
Yes. We use CSCS-carded applicators, as many construction sites ask for.
How do I request a quote?
There are four steps: send details, receive a fixed quote, we carry out the work, and it’s guaranteed. Step one needs little more than photographs and a postcode.
Will the sealant be an exact match to our finish?
No. An exact bespoke match isn’t something we can promise. We’ll show you the closest colours in the specified product’s range.
Who decides which product is used?
A specification, where there is one, decides it. Without one, the joint decides: its movement, its surfaces and what it has to cope with.
When is resealing likely to be due?
Nobody can honestly give a figure in years, because life depends on how much the joint moves, how exposed it is and how it’s cleaned and used. Regular checks let you plan resealing before leaks or damage.
Does weather matter for sealant work?
For external joints, yes. The joint has to be dry and within the product’s temperature range, so damp, frosty or very cold days can stop external work. Internal work is rarely affected.
Can you follow the specification on our project?
Yes. Include it with the drawings when you ask for a quote, and we’ll price the work to it, flagging anything that needs clarifying.
