How expansion joint sealing works in the Isle of Wight
Internal floor joints take trolleys, pallet trucks and forklifts. Unsupported edges break up under wheels, so the right filler or sealant for the traffic and movement matters. We’ll tell you if the edges need repairing before sealing and phasing can keep areas working. Most enquiries involve damp inside where a wall movement joint has failed and expansion joints filled with dirt and stones, across cladding panel joints, car park decks and ramps and blockwork control joints.
On arrival, we report to your site contact and complete whatever induction the building runs. Everything around the joints gets protected before anything is cut or cleaned, and the work usually takes anything from part of a day to a couple of weeks, depending on joint lengths, widths and access.
- Photos, joint lengths and drawings come to us, or we visit.
- We compare each joint’s width with the movement and the sealant’s capability.
- Old sealant and debris are cut out of every joint.
- Edges are checked, and we tell you if any need repairing before sealing.
- A sealant suited to the movement and traffic is laid to depth and tooled.
- Areas reopen once cured, and the work carries our 12-month guarantee.
How we quote
Whether it’s a single area or a whole estate, the same things set the price: what’s in scope, how we reach it, what’s specified and when it needs doing. Call for a quote and we will put a fixed figure on it.
Why appoint us
- A range of standard colours, depending on the product
- Public liability insurance in place
- One phone line for London, the South East and Scotland

Floors, slabs and movement joints across the Isle of Wight
Movement joints in brick, cladding panels and concrete appear on buildings all over the Isle of Wight, from schools to offices and car parks. When they fail, water and grit get in and the edges start to break.
Around the motorway corridors of the South East, business parks and industrial estates are common, and we cover the Isle of Wight along with the rest of the region. In the parts of the Isle of Wight near the sea, the elevations facing the weather are where sealant gives up first, so they’re worth inspecting more often.
Newport: For a school such as Nine Acres Primary School, playground and building joints can be done in the holidays. Hospital campuses such as Laidlaw Day Hospital (0.7 miles north of Newport) grow in stages, leaving movement joints wherever new blocks meet old.
Quoting for work in the Isle of Wight
The price varies from site to site. Expect it to depend on:
- Whether the work must be split into stages
- The product specified
- Site requirements such as inductions and permits
- Quantities, in metres or numbers
A quote for movement joints depends on quantities, condition and access, and any specification that applies. Ask us for a fixed quote.
What to include in your enquiry
It doesn’t need to be a full survey. A few details are enough to get going:
- Photos of the joints, close up and from further back
- What the building is and how it’s used
- Where the site is, with the postcode
- Approximate linear metres or a joint schedule
Pricing a project or setting a maintenance budget? We’ll quote against your scope and drawings you can plan around. If you have questions first, call the office on 01277 525 020 or email drawings and photos.
Looking after the joints
To get the most from the new sealant:
- Inspect movement joints alongside other routine building checks
- Keep product details with the building records for the next reseal
- Keep traffic off new joints until the cure time is up
- Keep racking legs and heavy point loads off floor joints
Movement joints belong on the planned maintenance inspection list. A periodic look picks up tears and lifting before water gets in and long before edges start to break. Should you spot a problem, you can call the office on 01277 525 020 or email the details over and send a picture.
On a multi-storey car park, a failed joint usually shows up as a leak onto the deck underneath. That water often carries de-icing salts with it. Sealing the joint promptly stops it at source.
When to bring in a specialist
Site maintenance staff can often handle a short internal joint. The usual problems come from preparation: new sealant over old, damp or dusty faces, or the wrong product for the movement.
Using site staff can make sense for a small touch-up, but anything bigger is another matter: a specialist works through quantities efficiently, leaves a consistent finish and backs it with a 12-month guarantee.
When it isn’t the sealant
Our job is the joint, not everything around it. On its own, sealant can’t deal with:
- Concrete or masonry repairs along the arrises
- Mechanical expansion joint covers, cover plates or proprietary joint systems (a specialist supplier’s job)
- Changing the joint layout or spacing of a structure
For managing agents and facilities managers
Main contractors use us as their sealant subcontractor on new-build and refurbishment projects. Programme, specification and site rules come first, with CSCS-carded applicators on site.
As a CHAS accredited contractor and Constructionline member, we make supplier vetting simple. We’re fully insured, and our insurance certificate can go with the quote.
Your questions answered
How soon can the area be used again?
We will confirm how long the chosen product needs to cure, and flag anything to keep off until it has cured.
Who decides which product is used?
A specification, where there is one, decides it. If there isn’t one, it comes down to the joint: its movement, its surfaces and what it has to cope with.
How do I request a quote?
The quote form is the simplest route, though you can also call the office on 01277 525 020 or use the quote form. Include photographs or drawings if you have them.
What if there’s asbestos in the old mastic?
Some older mastics, especially in pre-2000 buildings, can contain asbestos. Before we disturb old sealant in an older building, we ask to see the asbestos register or survey, and work stops until any suspect material has been tested. We don’t remove asbestos-containing materials.
How long does movement joint sealing take?
Expect a short visit for a handful of joints, or several days or more for a car park deck or long runs of facade joints, with phasing where areas must stay open. We’ll confirm when each area can be used again.
Do you have public liability insurance?
Yes. Mastic Doctor is fully insured, public liability included.
Does weather matter for sealant work?
For external joints, yes. The joint has to be dry and within the product’s temperature range, so frost, rain or cold mornings can delay outside work. Internal work is rarely affected.
