How coloured sealant works in the Scottish Borders
Stone, brick and cladding each bring their own colour challenge: sandstone, granite, brick and stained timber rarely have one flat colour. We choose a colour that reads well across the surface rather than chasing one spot. We work on shop-fit joinery and counters, office fit-out finishes and powder-coated and anodised frames, and what we’re called in for most is sealant that no longer suits recoated frames and dirty, discoloured joints in public areas.
Diagnose, treat, sign off: every visit follows that pattern. First comes an inspection and agreement on scope, then the work is carried out to the specified product and detail, and we finish with a walk round so the work can be signed off.
- The sealant type is chosen for the joint first, then the colour.
- We compare your RAL reference or sample with the colours made for that sealant.
- A short trial length can be approved before the full run on visible work.
- We remove the existing bead, clean the faces and set the depth.
- We apply the agreed colour and tool it neatly, with masking where the finish needs it.

Around Galashiels
Recent enquiries here include premises near Galashiels, Public House and Galashiels Academy and the streets around them. Galashiels has its own railway station: Galashiels station. Nearby you’ll also find Borders General Hospital (2.7 miles south-east) and Castle Holydean (4.4 miles south-east). Open spaces near Galashiels include Eildon Mid Hill.
Commercial premises across the Scottish Borders
From Galashiels, Hawick and Peebles outwards, the Scottish Borders has a broad spread of commercial premises: shops, offices, hotels, restaurants and units. Because we cover all of it, multi-site occupiers can bring every building under one quote, with colours matched site to site where the brand needs it.
Work in the Scottish Borders comes under Scotland’s own building standards and technical handbooks. Our part is sealing to the specification, whatever the building. Along the coast in the Scottish Borders, hospitality buildings tend to be busiest in the summer months, so work is often best planned for quieter months.
Galashiels: Premises within reach of Galashiels station, less than half a mile north of Galashiels, often have busy frontages where joints are seen by everyone passing. Trade counters and showrooms on estates such as Netherdale Industrial Estate, 0.8 miles to the south-east of Galashiels, need neat joints where customers see them.
What sealant work can’t fix
Part of a good diagnosis is knowing where sealant stops. We will tell you if the real problem is any of the following:
- Preventing all fading from sunlight and weathering
- Colour variation across natural stone or brick that no single shade can match
- Repairing damaged frames or cladding
Looking after the joints
Your facilities or cleaning team can help the joints last. Share these points with them:
- Record the product and colour reference on the building file
- Avoid abrasive pads on coloured sealant
- Ask contractors to check the colour before resealing
- Settle the colour with the designer at the start
Expect some change in appearance over the years. Some fading is part of normal ageing outdoors.
Plan resealing of visible joints before they look tired. A planned reseal avoids a run of patch repairs over the years.
Should maintenance staff do it?
Some joints are best left to specialists: fire-rated seals that must follow a tested detail, trafficked floor joints and external movement joints among them. A poor seal in places like these tends to cost more to put right later.
General builders and handymen seal joints, but it isn’t their main trade. A specialist brings correct preparation, depth control with backing rod and a product suited to that particular joint, which is what makes a joint last.
Why deal with it now?
It’s far cheaper to approve a sample than to strip and redo a full run. A short trial bead costs very little compared with replacing joints in the wrong colour.
Questions to ask before you book
- Whether primer will be used where the manufacturer specifies it
- The named product and why it was chosen
- How they’ll work around occupants
- Whether their applicators hold CSCS cards
Common problems we fix in the Scottish Borders
Mould and staining discolour coloured joints in some areas. Mould that has grown into sealant typically can’t be cleaned out.
Any of the following is a good reason to get the joints checked over:
- Old sealant that has yellowed, darkened or faded
- Previous reseals that don’t match the original
- Smeared sealant on stone or joinery
- A bead that fights the cladding or frame colour
Common questions from the Scottish Borders clients
Can you seal to a brand colour across several sites?
Yes. We work with shop fitters, hotel groups and office fit-out contractors. Our area takes in Greater London, the South East and Scotland.
What site paperwork can you supply?
Each site asks for different documents, so tell us what you need and we’ll confirm it when we quote.
Does a coloured sealant perform differently from a standard one?
Performance comes from the sealant type and the installation. The joint gets the product it needs, in a colour from that product’s range with the same preparation and backing.
Do you use coloured sanitary silicone?
Yes. Sanitary silicones with anti-mould additives come in a range of colours too. We will confirm what’s available for the specified product and agree it with you.
Do you take on small jobs?
We quote for single jobs as well as large packages and programmes. Photos and a description are enough to start.
Can you fit around our working hours?
We’re in the office from 8am until 5pm, Monday to Friday. Tell us your site hours and access windows and the work will be fitted around them.
Can you work while the building is occupied?
Yes, as long as we plan it. We agree a sequence with your contact so just one area at a time is disrupted.
