Coloured sealant across Argyll and Bute: what to expect
We take on colour-matched work across new fit-outs, refurbishments and resealing of existing joints. When replacing old joints, the new colour typically has to match what’s already there. We work on hotel bathrooms and public areas, powder-coated and anodised frames and natural stone and brick, and the usual reasons a site gets in touch are marked sealant in hotel bathrooms and coloured joints that have cracked with movement.
The first thing on site is a walk round with your contact, to confirm the scope, the order of work and any areas we must keep clear. After that, any old or failed material is removed, each joint is prepared and the new sealant goes in.
- Photos or drawings show us the finishes and joints.
- We send the closest colours from the product’s range.
- The programme and access are agreed, including any phasing.
- We prepare each joint, prime where needed and fit backing.
- We seal in the approved colour and tool it smooth.

A good quote starts with a clear picture: what’s there, how much of it, how we reach it and what’s specified. Send what you have, and we’ll arrange a site visit if anything is unclear.
Around Helensburgh
Locally, jobs take us to sites close to Lomond School, The Henry Bell pub and St Joseph's R.C. Church. Helensburgh has its own railway station: Helensburgh Central station. A little further out are Ardencaple Castle (1.3 miles west) and Victoria Infirmary (0.5 miles south-east). For a walk, there’s Lyle Hill.
Shops, offices and hotels in Argyll and Bute
From Helensburgh, Oban and Dunoon outwards, Argyll and Bute has a broad spread of commercial premises: shops, offices, hotels, restaurants and units. We cover the whole area, so occupiers with several sites can use one contractor and one point of contact.
The west of Scotland is wetter than the east, but external sealing anywhere in Scotland needs a dry joint and the right temperature, so we keep some flexibility in the dates. Parts of Argyll and Bute lie on or near the coast, where wind-driven rain and, closer to the shore, salt air are harder on external joints. Product choice and joint preparation matter more there.
Helensburgh: For a hotel such as Commodore Hotel, which lies west of Helensburgh, the colour of a joint at the bar or the bath matters to the look of the room. Offices and shops close to stations such as Helensburgh Central station, under half a mile to the south-west of Helensburgh, tend to be busy all day, so sealant work is planned around opening hours.
How the quote is worked out
Each job is priced on its own details. The things that drive the figure:
- Access and working height
- The site’s rules and procedures
- How much existing material needs removing
- The size and state of each joint
The product called for affects the cost, as does the preparation each joint needs. Access, phasing and site rules also count.
What we need to price the job
Good information means a firmer quote. Helpful details to send:
- Specification clauses that apply
- The site address and postcode
- Drawings or a marked-up plan, if available
- How the joints are reached, and at what height
Send us photographs, drawings or a joint schedule and a fixed quote comes back to you. If the job needs a look first, we’ll arrange a site visit.
When to bring in a specialist
General builders and handymen seal joints, but it isn’t their main trade. A specialist brings correct preparation, depth control with backing rod and a product suited to that particular joint.
The visible bead is only part of the job. Correct depth, the right primer and a sealant matched to the movement are where general trades tend to cut corners.
When it isn’t the sealant
Sealant solves a lot, but not everything, and we’d rather tell you before you spend money. These need a different solution:
- A colour that never alters with age
- A guaranteed perfect match to every finish
- Paintable products in joints they aren’t suited to
Surface by surface
Cladding panels
Where panels vary in colour, the joint colour is agreed for the whole elevation. A neutral tone from the range often works best and we can trial it first.
Office fit-outs
Office fit-outs include glazed partitions, kitchens, washrooms and reception areas. A consistent colour across floors looks deliberate for the tenant.
Aftercare for building managers
Your facilities or cleaning team can help the joints last. Pass these on to them:
- Approve a sample bead on high-profile areas
- Record the product and colour reference on the building file
- Standardise colours across a portfolio
- Reseal whole runs rather than patching single joints
Expect some change in appearance over the years. That is normal for exposed sealant.
Make sure every contractor knows which sealant and colour are on the building file. That keeps new work in line with what’s there.
Common questions from Argyll and Bute clients
Do you hold CHAS accreditation?
Yes. CHAS accredited, Constructionline member, and our applicators hold CSCS cards.
When can you be on site?
Mention the site’s hours and access windows in your enquiry, and we’ll schedule the work to suit. You can reach the office between 8am and 5pm, Monday to Friday.
Which sealant will you use?
Where there’s a specification, we use the product it names. If not, we choose for the movement, the surfaces and the conditions, in line with the manufacturer’s guidance.
Are your applicators CSCS-carded?
Yes. Our applicators hold CSCS cards.
Will the colour fade over time?
Some change over time is normal. Exposure, product and colour all play a part, so no colour stays exactly the same for ever.
Can you seal to a brand colour across several sites?
Yes. Shop fits, hotels and office fit-outs are a regular part of our work. Sites anywhere in our area, from London and the South East to Scotland, can be included, so one colour reference can carry across every site.
Is coloured sealant weaker than white?
Performance comes from the sealant type and the installation. We choose the right product for the joint first and then pick from its colour range, installed in exactly the same way.
