Fire stopping for Camore sites

Photos, a specification or a quick description of the joints is enough to start a fixed quote.

What sealant work can’t fix

A proper diagnosis includes knowing what sealant can’t do. You’ll hear from us if the cause turns out to be any of the following:

  • Openings that need collars, wraps, batts or boards rather than sealant
  • Fire doors, dampers or other fire safety equipment
  • Construction that lacks the fire resistance the seal relies on

If in doubt, ring 01277 525 020 or use the quote form and we will say what we think before you book.

Where we work in Camore

  • Joints between fire-resisting walls and floors
  • Cable penetrations
  • Linear gaps at wall heads
  • Small duct penetrations where the tested detail allows
  • Service gaps in risers
  • Pipe penetrations

Fire stopping for commercial buildings in Camore

Fire-rated sealant suits many small service penetrations: copper and steel pipes, cables and some small ducts where the tested detail allows. Other openings need collars, wraps, batts, pillows or boards. We use sealant where it is the specified product, and we tell you when a detail calls for something else. The enquiries we see most involve fire stopping installed outside its tested range and seals disturbed by maintenance and left open, across linear gaps at wall heads, cable penetrations and service gaps in risers. Searching for sealant specialists in Camore? Mastic Doctor has worked for contractors, FMs and building owners since 2005, CHAS accredited and a Constructionline member.

Around smaller places such as Camore, compartment walls and floors tend to be in schools, hotels, care homes and community buildings. Where services pass through, specified fire-rated sealant is installed following the manufacturer’s guidance for that wall or floor.

Our workmanship is guaranteed for 12 months, wherever the site is. If a joint we sealed fails because of how it was installed, we come back and put it right.

On site: what to expect

A typical day starts with protection: masking tape along the joint edges and sheeting over anything nearby. On site, the work typically takes a single visit for a short list of penetrations, or a phased programme for a whole building, and our waste is bagged and taken away as we go. For a building near Camore, directions, keys and a contact on the day are worth sorting early. We’ll confirm the plan with the fixed quote.

  1. The specification and schedule come first, so we know which details apply.
  2. Access, permits and the order of areas are agreed with the site team.
  3. Each opening is checked for wall or floor type, service, gap and depth.
  4. Foam, ordinary sealant and debris come out.
  5. The specified backing and sealant go in to depth and are finished neatly.
  6. Anything outside the detail is reported to you rather than sealed.

Advice

When to bring in a specialist

A short, simple internal joint is often within reach of a maintenance team. Where it goes wrong is preparation: new sealant over old, damp or dusty faces, or the wrong product for the movement.

Using site staff can make sense for a small touch-up, but larger jobs are different: a specialist brings efficiency, a consistent finish and a 12-month guarantee.

Looking after the joints

After handover, a little attention goes a long way:

  • Include service cupboards in routine inspections
  • Put resealing into every M&E and fit-out package
  • Settle who seals which penetrations at the start of a project
  • Get seals inspected before ceilings and boxing close

Give the sealant its full cure time before ceilings, boxing or decoration go over it. Not every fire-rated product can be painted.

Keep a register of where seals are and what they are made of. When a new service goes through, everyone knows which product and detail to match, which saves guesswork.

Work for main contractors and building owners

Housing associations and managing agents often need work done across blocks and communal areas. Work can be phased so residents and staff keep access throughout, and each stage is agreed with your contact.

Agents, factors and owners’ representatives all follow the same route: send the details, accept a fixed quote, and we carry out and guarantee the work. We can agree access arrangements and keyholder contacts beforehand.

Compartments and services around Camore

Scotland has its own building standards: the non-domestic Technical Handbook (clause 2.1.14) says service penetrations should be fire stopped to at least the fire resistance duration of the wall or floor, using products tested for the way they’re used. We install fire-rated sealant to that tested detail where it is specified. Camore has several hotels close by, all within 2 miles. In hotels, bedroom and corridor walls are typically fire-resisting, so services added in a refit need sealing with the specified product.

Holiday works at schools like Dornoch Academy often leave service openings to seal before pupils return. For a hotel such as The Eagle Hotel, which lies east of Camore, penetration seals are worth checking after any refit or services upgrade.

How the job changes by surface

Drylining partitions

Drylined fire walls are tested in a particular build-up. We check that the product’s detail covers that partition type and board thickness first.

Risers and ceiling voids

Voids hide a lot of unsealed openings. We work through the areas on your schedule methodically and tell you about openings outside the list.

Questions about Camore

Do you work on fire-rated sealing in hotels in Camore?

Yes, where fire-rated sealant is the specified product. We match the product to the wall or floor and the services, and say if something other than sealant is needed.

What do Scotland’s building standards say about service penetrations in Camore?

Under Scotland’s non-domestic Technical Handbook (clause 2.1.14), service penetrations should keep at least the wall or floor’s fire resistance duration, using products tested for their end use. The detail is set by the designer and goes through the warrant process; we install the specified product to its tested detail.

How do you choose the sealant?

A specification, where there is one, decides it. Without one, the joint decides: how much it moves, what it bonds to and whether it’s wet, trafficked or fire-rated.

Do you work to architects’ specifications?

Yes. The specification and the manufacturer’s installation guidance are what we work to.

How many days will you need on site?

That varies with the scale of the job, though a typical visit normally takes anything from one day to a planned run of visits, depending on the number of seals and the access. For bigger or phased jobs, we will set out a timescale with the quote.

Is it fine to apply new sealant on top of old?

No. Failed sealant is removed and the faces cleaned back to sound, dry material first, because fresh silicone will not bond with aged silicone.

Do you offer coloured sealant?

It depends on the product specified. Some ranges offer many colours, others very few, so we’ll confirm the colours available for the specified product with the quote.
