When to call us in Scatness

Sometimes the sealant holds but the substrate breaks away. Weak or crumbling concrete, brick or render edges give the sealant nothing sound to grip.

If one of these sounds familiar, it’s time for a closer look:

  • Hardened, cracked sealant on exposed facades
  • Debris jammed in movement joints
  • Previous reseals laid over old sealant
  • Chipped joint edges on forklift routes

In and around Scatness, the right filler or sealant for each joint depends on the traffic and the movement it takes.

Questions to ask before you book

  • Can the work be phased to keep areas open?
  • Is the sealant right for the movement and the substrate?
  • Whether their applicators hold CSCS cards
  • The terms of the workmanship guarantee

About our expansion joint sealing in Scatness

We’ve been sealing expansion and movement joints for over 20 years, for main contractors, FMs, managing agents and building owners. Our applicators are CSCS-carded, we are CHAS accredited and a Constructionline member, and we carry five million pounds of public liability insurance. Each job is backed by a 12-month guarantee on the workmanship. Most enquiries involve debris jammed in movement joints and car park joints leaking onto vehicles below, on brickwork movement joints, blockwork control joints and cladding panel joints. Sealant contractors, mastic applicators, sealant specialists: whatever the job title on the order, the work in Scatness is the same: the right product in a properly prepared joint.

Around smaller Scottish places like Scatness, slabs needing attention are often in agricultural buildings, workshops, schools and hotels. Concrete slabs and yards there take vehicles and weather.

Building owners and contractors get the same cover: a 12-month guarantee on our workmanship. It doesn’t extend to damage, faults in the building or work by others, and we’re upfront about that.

Should maintenance staff do it?

A short, simple internal joint is often within reach of a maintenance team. Where it goes wrong is preparation: new sealant over old, damp or dusty faces, or the wrong product for the movement.

For a quick touch-up, site staff may be fine, but anything bigger is another matter: a specialist brings efficiency, a consistent finish and a 12-month guarantee.

Different surfaces, different methods

Brickwork and blockwork joints

Long brick and block elevations have movement joints at intervals. We use a sealant rated for the movement, typically low-modulus laid over backing rod at the correct depth.

Cladding panel joints

Access to cladding joints is agreed before the price is fixed. Photos taken near the joints help us price accurately or a site visit fills the gaps.

Where floor joints take the most wear near Scatness

Scatness lies within about 1 mile of the sea. Open joints in coastal car parks and yards let in salt-laden water as well as grit, which is why split joints are worth sealing before the edges deteriorate. For an island location such as Scatness, work is planned around ferry crossings and the weather. Photos and joint sizes help us load the right products.

A joint near Scatness that has lost its sealant lets in water and grit, and the edges suffer next; we will tell you if the edges need repairing first.

Scatness is in the Shetland Islands. Our applicators travel to Scatness for work on movement joints. Scatness is one of 63 places in the Shetland Islands on our list for movement joints.

FAQs: Scatness

Will our site in Scatness have to close for joint sealing?

Rarely. Work is phased around your operations. The phasing plan comes with the quote.

Our building in Scatness is near the coast: does that change the sealant?

It can. Driven rain and salt are tougher on outside sealant than sheltered inland conditions. That puts more weight on product choice, primers where the manufacturer specifies them, and correct joint sizing.

Do you take on multi-site work?

Yes. Several buildings can share a single quote, with one point of contact.

Are you CHAS accredited?

Yes. Mastic Doctor is CHAS accredited and a Constructionline member, which helps with supplier vetting.

What causes movement joint sealant to fail?

The common causes are poor preparation, three-sided adhesion, the wrong movement class and weathering. Working out the cause comes first since each needs a different fix.

Is movement joint sealing guaranteed?

Our workmanship on movement joints carries a 12-month guarantee. Damage from later works or traffic loads outside the joint’s design isn’t a workmanship fault.

Can you fit around our working hours?

Mention the site’s hours and access windows in your enquiry, and we will schedule the work to suit. Our office runs Monday to Friday, 8am until 5pm.

Our process

In a busy building, the work is phased so only one area is out of use at a time. Each section is protected, cleaned back and sealed, then handed back before the next one starts. Tell us who will meet us and how to get in at your building near Scatness. We’ll confirm the plan with the fixed quote.

  1. Photos, joint lengths and drawings come to us, or we visit.
  2. Joint widths and expected movement are checked against what the sealant can take and tell you if the design looks wrong for the movement.
  3. Old sealant and debris are cut out of every joint.
  4. Any broken arrises or friable edges are flagged before work goes further.
  5. The right sealant goes in at the right depth, bonded to the two sides only.
  6. Areas reopen once cured, and the work carries our 12-month guarantee.

Preparing the site

  • Explain the parking and delivery arrangements
  • For older buildings, check the asbestos register before work
  • Tell us which areas need to stay in use

Looking after the joints

After handover, a little attention goes a long way:

  • Keep traffic off new joints until the cure time is up
  • Inspect exposed joints once the cold weather has passed
  • Sweep decks, ramps and floors so grit doesn’t collect in the joints
  • Keep product details with the building records for the next reseal

Movement joints belong on the planned maintenance inspection list. Early splits and edges starting to lift show up on a routine check and long before edges start to break. Should you spot a problem, you can phone 01277 525 020 or email a schedule or drawings and send a picture.

Floor joints with failed fillers break up quickly under wheels. Broken arrises jolt trucks, loads and drivers. Sealing early protects the edges.

When it isn’t the sealant

Being straight saves everyone time. Fresh joints won’t solve:

  • Structural movement beyond what the joints were designed for (that needs a structural engineer)
  • Broken or spalled joint edges, which need repairing before any sealant goes in
  • Damaged metal nosings or cover plates over a joint

Not sure which it is? You can ring 01277 525 020 or send photos by email and we will tell you honestly.
