Fire stopping for Sound sites

Photos, a specification or a quick description of the joints is enough to start a fixed quote.

Honest limits

Not every problem is a sealant problem, and we’re upfront when that’s the case. It won’t fix:

  • Signing off or certifying a building’s fire stopping
  • Plastic pipes whose detail calls for a collar or wrap
  • Walls or floors that aren’t fire-resisting to begin with

If you’re not sure, just call 01277 525 020 or send details through our quote form and we’ll give you a straight answer.

Surfaces we seal

  • Pipe penetrations
  • Service gaps in risers
  • Linear gaps at wall heads
  • Cable penetrations
  • Joints between fire-resisting walls and floors
  • Small duct penetrations where the tested detail allows

How we handle fire stopping in Sound

Our applicators are CSCS-carded, and we are CHAS accredited and a Constructionline member. We don’t hold a third-party fire-stopping installer certificate, and we won’t pretend otherwise. What we offer is careful installation of the specified sealant to its tested detail, with a 12-month guarantee on our workmanship. Most enquiries involve fire-rated sealant that has cracked or shrunk back and openings found when ceilings come down for a refit, across linear gaps at wall heads, pipe penetrations and joints between fire-resisting walls and floors. Looking for mastic applicators who cover Sound? We’ve been sealing commercial buildings since 2005, CHAS accredited and a Constructionline member.

Travel to smaller places like Sound is planned so every penetration is sealed on one trip. Photos of the gaps, the services and the wall or floor type help us bring the right products.

We sign every job off with a 12-month guarantee. The promise is simple: if our work fails within that year, we put it right.

Why deal with it now?

Sealing behind the M&E trades area by area beats a sweep at the end. Openings are visible, access is open and nothing has to be taken down. For buildings near Sound, dealing with all the failing joints at once saves return trips. Photos of each area help us quote the whole job.

The work involved drives the cost: removing old material, preparing the joints, the product, the access and how the work is phased. Call for a fixed quote.

Commercial clients in Sound

If you look after buildings for someone else, you need clear quotes and clear reporting. We quote a fixed sum, confirm the scope and walk the finished work with you or your representative, plus a 12-month guarantee.

For main contractors, we work as the sealant subcontractor. We work to your programme, your specification and your site rules, and our applicators hold CSCS cards.

After the work

To get the most from the new sealant:

  • Ask which product is in place before decorating
  • Have penetrations checked while they can still be seen
  • Look above ceilings when tiles are lifted for other jobs
  • Settle who seals which penetrations at the start of a project

Store the specified product details somewhere the next contractor can find them. Anyone resealing later needs to know which product and detail were used.

Regular walk-rounds of service areas are worth the time. Catching a damaged seal early keeps the fix small; found late, it can be one of many.

Questions we are asked in Sound

Is Sound inside the area you cover, given it’s on an island?

Yes, Sound is within the area we cover. Every Scottish council area is within our area. Ferry times and the weather set the plan, so we ask for photos and a full list first.

Can you work at a site such as North Ness Business Park, by Sound?

Yes. We cover Sound and the area around it, including industrial estates, business parks and retail parks such as North Ness Business Park. Photos and a short description are enough for a first look.

Does weather matter for sealant work?

It can, for external work. Wet joints and cold, damp or frosty conditions stop the sealant bonding properly, so we watch the forecast and rearrange outside work if we have to. Internal work is far less affected.

What do BS EN 1366-3 and BS EN 13501-2 mean?

The tests are BS EN 1366-3 for penetrations and BS EN 1366-4 for linear joints, and classification is to BS EN 13501-2. EI 60 means integrity and insulation for 60 minutes in the tested arrangement.

Do you guarantee your work?

Yes. The 12-month guarantee covers our preparation and application, but not damage, misuse or other trades’ work.

How many days will you need on site?

We plan the time on site around your programme and access. You’ll have an expected duration with the quote.

When is resealing likely to be due?

Nobody can honestly give a figure in years, because life depends on how much the joint moves, how exposed it is and how it’s cleaned and used. Regular checks let you plan resealing before leaks or damage.

Fire-rated sealing for Sound buildings

Work on Sound has to fit the ferry timetable and the forecast. With the specification and photographs of the openings, the right fire-rated products travel with us. Sound has plenty of hotels close by, all within 2 miles. In hotels, bedroom and corridor walls are typically fire-resisting, so services added in a refit need sealing with the specified product.

Schools such as Anderson High School often have new data and services installed during holidays, and penetrations through fire-resisting walls should be checked afterwards. Hotels like The Lerwick Hotel, 0.8 miles north-east of Sound, are refurbished in phases, and each phase can open up compartment walls. Tenant changes at parks like North Ness Business Park (to the north-east of Sound) bring new data and services, and openings through fire-resisting walls need the specified seal.

Sound is about 1 mile south-west of Lerwick, in the Shetland Islands. Our applicators travel to Sound for work on service penetrations, handled exactly as we handle every other area. 63 places across the Shetland Islands fall within our area, including Sound.

If you need fire stopping in ZE1, the process matches everywhere else we work: send details, get a quote, we seal, guaranteed. We cover commercial and managed buildings on Quoys Road, South Road and Oversund Road. We also cover Lerwick (1 mile north-east), Gulberwick (2 miles south-west), Gremista (2 miles north), Grindiscol (2 miles east) and Heogan (2 miles north-east) for service penetrations. Sound is one of the busier places in the Shetland Islands, and we take on service penetrations for its commercial and public buildings. Where a site is remote or on an island, travel and materials need planning ahead.

Near you in Sound

We work on buildings around Gilbertson Park, among other places. Well-known places in the area include Gilbert Bain Hospital (0.7 miles north-east) and Shetland Museum (1.2 miles north-east). Green spaces nearby include Hill of Berry and Clickimin Loch.

How a job runs

The first thing on site is a walk round with your contact, agreeing which joints are in scope, where to start and what must stay open. Then we strip out anything that has failed, prepare every joint and seal it. Where we can, we combine work around Sound with other jobs nearby. Tell us how flexible your dates are.

  1. First we go through the drawings, schedule or specification for the seals.
  2. On site, each opening is checked against the tested detail it is meant to follow.
  3. Unsuitable fillers and loose debris are taken out of each opening.
  4. We fit the backing the detail asks for, to the stated depth.
  5. Fire-rated or intumescent sealant is gunned in to the specified depth, then tooled.
  6. If an opening needs something other than sealant, we tell you instead of improvising.

Before we start on site

  • Point out any areas we must not close
  • Let building users know which areas are affected
  • Explain the parking and delivery arrangements

Site staff or a sealant specialist?

The visible bead is only part of the job. Correct depth, the right primer and a sealant matched to the movement are where general trades tend to cut corners.

Some joints are best left to specialists: fire-rated seals that must follow a tested detail, trafficked floor joints and external movement joints among them. Getting these wrong normally costs more in the end than doing them right.
