Mastic packages on Sound sites

Sound lies within about 1 mile of the sea. On a coastal site, facade and perimeter joints face driven rain and, closer to the beach, salt, so joint design, primers and product choice deserve extra care. Sound is on Scotland’s drier eastern side. Cold, damp starts still stop external sealing on some days. External dates keep a little give.

Hotel extensions and refits, at places such as The Lerwick Hotel, which lies north-east of Sound, usually run between busy periods, so the sealing is squeezed into short windows. For contractors refurbishing units at places like North Ness Business Park, 1.4 miles north-east of Sound, the mastic covers cladding panels, roller-door and window perimeters. When a school such as Anderson High School is extended or refurbished, the mastic package is often squeezed into the holidays.

Sound is about 1 mile south-west of Lerwick, in the Shetland Islands. We cover commercial sites throughout Sound, for single jobs and planned programmes alike. Our the Shetland Islands coverage takes in 63 places, large and small.

Postcode districts covered here: ZE1 for mastic packages. If your site is on Quoys Road, South Road and Oversund Road or close by, send details and we’ll quote for mastic packages. Just outside Sound, we also work in Lerwick (1 mile north-east), Gulberwick (2 miles south-west), Gremista (2 miles north), Grindiscol (2 miles east) and Heogan (2 miles north-east). Sound is one of the busier places in the Shetland Islands, and we take on mastic packages for its commercial and public buildings. Island and remote sites need extra planning, with travel, ferry crossings where needed and weather to allow for, so mention the location when you ring 01277 525 020 or email drawings and photos.

Construction mastic for commercial buildings in Sound

The specification and the programme set the job, not to habit. If a product is named, that’s what goes in. Joint widths, backing, primers and tooling follow the manufacturer’s guidance, so the joints perform as the designer intended. If you’re dealing with frame gaps too wide for sealant alone and cracks opening in caulked internal joints, we can put it right, on sanitary and kitchen joints, brick and block movement joints and internal decorators’ caulk alike. Sealant applicators who only do sealant are a different proposition from a general trade with a gun in the van: in Sound, that means joint design, primers and backing rod as standard.

For a site around Sound, we plan the mastic in as few trips as the programme allows. Clear drawings, a programme and photos let us bring the right sealants, primers and backing rod first time.

Every job we finish is backed by a 12-month workmanship guarantee, wherever the site is. If a joint we sealed fails because of how it was installed, we come back and put it right.

Honest limits

Before quoting, we check that sealant is the right answer. It isn’t the answer for:

  • Designing joint widths or choosing the specification (that sits with the designer)
  • Joints damaged after sign-off by following trades
  • Faulty frames rather than failed sealant

Not sure which it is? You can call the office on 01277 525 020 or email the details over and we’ll tell you honestly before you book.

What we seal

  • Window and door perimeters
  • Cladding and panel joints
  • Brick and block movement joints
  • Internal decorators’ caulk
  • Floor and skirting junctions
  • Sanitary and kitchen joints

On site: what to expect

Our CSCS-carded applicators arrive with the sealants, primers and backing rod the job calls for. Any old material is cut back to clean, sound faces, the manufacturer’s primer is applied where it’s called for, and the sealant is tooled off neatly. For a building near Sound, directions, keys and a contact on the day are worth sorting early. We will confirm the plan with the fixed quote.

  1. Drawings, specification and programme come to us.
  2. Quantities are measured and a fixed price returned.
  3. We agree with the site team which areas come first.
  4. Plots or floors are sealed as they’re handed over.
  5. Joints are prepared, backed and sealed to the specification.
  6. After snagging, the work is handed over under our 12-month guarantee.

Advice

Building owners, agents and FMs in Sound

Facilities managers want contractors who arrive with the paperwork sorted. Let us know the documents you need (RAMS, insurance certificate, CSCS details) and we’ll confirm them with the quote.

Housing associations and managing agents often need work done across blocks and communal areas. We phase the work so people keep access, with each stage agreed with your site contact.

What the job involves on each surface

Internal decorators’ caulk

Where the specification calls for it, acrylic decorators’ caulk goes on non-moving internal gaps before painting. It’s for gaps that stay still and get painted, and we use a flexible sealant where there’s movement.

Window and door perimeters

A frame gap that’s too wide can’t just be filled with sealant. Gaps outside the product’s range are raised with the site team.

Sound: questions and answers

Can you take on a job at a hospital such as Gilbert Bain Hospital?

Yes, provided the work is planned with the site’s estates team. Before anything starts, the estates team agrees permits, inductions and infection-control measures with us.

Can you take on a job in Sound, on the island?

Yes, Sound is within the area we cover. Our area covers all of Scotland, cities, towns and islands alike. We plan island jobs around the ferry and the forecast, and bring everything the job needs on the first crossing.

Do you guarantee new-build sealant work?

It carries a 12-month guarantee on our workmanship. We’re also fully insured for public liability.

Do you need to see the site first?

It depends on the job. Straightforward work can often be priced from photographs and measurements, while larger or less clear jobs get a site visit first.

Do you use the sealant named in the specification?

Specification first, then the maker’s instructions. Preparation, backing and depth follow the product guidance.

Can the building stay open while you work?

In the majority of cases, yes. We phase the work so most of the building stays in use, with each area protected and signed.

Do you work to architects’ specifications?

Yes. Include it with the drawings when you ask for a quote, and the quote will be based on it, flagging anything that needs clarifying.

How the quote is worked out

Each job is priced on its own details. The things that drive the figure:

  • Induction, permit and paperwork requirements
  • Whether old sealant has to be cut out first
  • Quantities, in metres or numbers
  • Specialist products, such as fire-rated or hygienic sealants

The work involved drives the cost: removing old material, preparing the joints, the product, the access and how the work is phased. Call for a quote.

What we need to price the job

The more we know, the firmer the quote. Helpful details to send:

  • Any dates the work must fit around
  • Any specification or named product
  • Photos of the joints, close up and from further back
  • Where the site is, with the postcode

Photos, drawings or a schedule of the joints and a fixed quote comes back to you. If the job needs a look first, we will arrange a site visit.

Site staff or a sealant specialist?

There’s also the paperwork. Many sites expect CSCS cards, RAMS and proof of insurance, and our CSCS-carded applicators are used to working under those rules.

For most general trades, sealant is a sideline. A specialist prepares properly, controls joint depth and picks a product with the right movement class.
