Fire stopping across Gurnard

Tell us what needs sealing and where, with photos or drawings if you have them, and we’ll price it.

Fire stopping in Gurnard

On a fit-out or refurbishment, we follow the services contractors floor by floor. To price a package, call the office on 01277 525 020 or use the quote form with the schedule or marked-up drawings. Tell us what records you need and we will confirm with the quote. If you have non-fire-rated filler around services and seals disturbed by maintenance and left open, we can help. Most enquiries from Gurnard start with one failed joint and grow into a wider look at the building: we look at the rest while we’re there and tell you what we find.

Rural conversions around Gurnard can put new fire-resisting partitions inside older structures. A penetration seal only performs as tested if product, substrate, service, gap and depth all match the detail.

The 12-month guarantee covers our workmanship: the preparation, the sealing and the tooling. It doesn’t extend to damage, other trades’ later work or movement the joint was never designed to take.

Our process

When we get to site, we report to your site contact and complete whatever induction the building runs. Floors, finishes and fittings next to the joints are covered before any cutting starts, and the work typically takes longer where risers, ceiling voids or occupied floors have to be worked through in sequence. Rural sites near Gurnard may need directions, gate codes or a contact on site. Send that with the details and we’ll confirm the plan with the quote.

  1. We ask for the product and detail your designer has specified.
  2. We sort the openings by the detail each one needs.
  3. Old or wrong materials are cut out.
  4. Where the detail needs backing, it goes in at the stated depth.
  5. We gun the sealant in to the specified depth around each service and tool it.
  6. Completed areas are checked with you, with the records agreed when we quoted.

Before we start on site

  • Flag any permit to work we’ll need
  • Explain the parking and delivery arrangements
  • For older buildings, check the asbestos register before work

What the job involves on each surface

Drylining partitions

Holes in board are often cut larger than needed. If the gap exceeds the tested range, sealant alone won’t do, and the detail may call for board patching or another product.

Linear joints

Joints at the top of partitions may need to move as the slab above deflects. We use the product and backing the detail names for that movement, along the full length of the run.

Should maintenance staff do it?

Certain joints really need a specialist: for instance fire-rated seals that must match a tested detail, trafficked floor joints and external movement joints. Getting these wrong usually costs more in the end than doing them right.

For a quick touch-up, site staff may be fine, but larger jobs are different: a specialist works through quantities efficiently, leaves a consistent finish and backs it with a 12-month guarantee.

Maintenance after handover

For the best life from the joints:

  • Include service cupboards in routine inspections
  • Keep product data and details in the fire safety file
  • Settle who seals which penetrations at the start of a project
  • Treat an open penetration as a priority repair

Add risers, plant rooms and ceiling voids to routine fire-stopping checks. Watch for cracked sealant, new services with no seal and openings that have grown, and report them promptly.

Write fire stopping into the scope of any work crossing a compartment wall or floor. That way the opening is sealed while the trade and access are still there instead of being left for someone else.

Building owners, agents and FMs in Gurnard

Facilities managers want contractors who arrive with the paperwork sorted. Let us know the documents you need (RAMS, insurance certificate, CSCS details) and we will confirm them with the quote.

Hospitality, education, healthcare, office and retail clients come to us directly as well. We plan around the way the building is used, so the building keeps working while we do.

When to call us in Gurnard

Fire stopping can get squeezed at the end of a programme, or done by whoever is on site. That is how unsuitable products and improvised details end up in compartment walls, which then have to be put right.

Clients normally get in touch after noticing something like this:

  • Head-of-wall gaps with no fire seal
  • Fire stopping installed outside its tested range
  • Unsealed openings around new pipes and cables
  • Damaged fire seals in risers and voids

For a building such as All Saints' Church, new heating or data runs are the usual reason penetrations need sealing.

Compartment walls and floors in Gurnard

For England, the fire stopping of penetrations is dealt with in Approved Document B. References to the older BS 476 classes are being removed from it from 2 September 2029, after which the European classification, BS EN 13501-2, is the route, subject to transitional arrangements. What we install is set by the specification, and it goes in to the tested detail. There are a number of hotels within about 2 miles of Gurnard. Hotels are divided into compartments, and refurbishments that add pipes and cables through bedroom and corridor walls leave gaps to close.

On a hospital site such as St Mary's Hospital, which lies south of Gurnard, fire-rated sealant goes in where the specification calls for it, with the work planned around the estates team’s permits. Hotels such as New Holmwood Hotel, 0.9 miles north-east of Gurnard, rely on fire-resisting walls between bedrooms and corridors, and refits that add services leave penetrations to seal where fire-rated sealant is specified.

Gurnard is about 1 mile west of Cowes, in the Isle of Wight. We send applicators to Gurnard for service penetrations, handled exactly as we handle every other area. Across the Isle of Wight, 125 places are covered, Gurnard among them. For work in that direction, see our Portsmouth page.

Postcode districts covered here: PO31 for service penetrations. We cover commercial and managed buildings on Cow Lane, The Avenue and Shore Road and the roads nearby. Just outside Gurnard, we also work in Cowes (1 mile east), Northwood (1 mile south), Rew Street (1 mile south-west), Great Thorness (2 miles south-west) and Noke Common (2 miles south). Further afield, our area takes in Newport (4 miles south), Ryde (7 miles east), Sandown (10 miles south-east), Shanklin (11 miles south-east), Ventnor (12 miles south-east) and Oakfield (8 miles east). Remote and island addresses take more planning, from travel and ferries to the weather, so give the site location in your enquiry.

Common questions from Gurnard clients

Do you seal service penetrations in hotels around Gurnard?

Yes. We install fire-rated and intumescent sealant where it is specified. We match the product to the wall or floor and the services, and say if something other than sealant is needed.

How does the move away from BS 476 affect penetration seals in Gurnard?

From 2 September 2029, Approved Document B drops its BS 476 references in favour of BS EN 13501-2 classification, with transitional arrangements. Whichever applies, we install the specified product to its tested detail; the specification is for the designer to set.

Can one quote cover more than one building?

Yes. A group of buildings can go on one quote, and you deal with one contact throughout across South East England, Greater London and Scotland.

Will you quote for a small job?

Single areas, one-off repairs and whole buildings are all quoted the same way: send details, get a fixed quote, we seal, guaranteed.

Can staff carry on working while you’re here?

Normally, yes. Phased work can be planned so areas stay in use.

Do your applicators hold CSCS cards?

Yes. Should the site need card details in advance, tell us and we’ll confirm them with the quote.

Does the weather affect the work?

For external joints, yes. The joint has to be dry and within the product’s temperature range, so damp, frosty or very cold days can stop external work. Inside work is seldom held up.
