Common problems we fix in Whitchurch
Mixing products or improvising a detail breaks the link with the test evidence. An oversized gap, too shallow a bead, missing backing or two makers’ products combined are what we find most often.
Look out for the following:
- Penetration schedules that need working through
- Head-of-wall gaps with no fire seal
- Damaged fire seals in risers and voids
- Openings found when ceilings come down for a refit
For a school such as Whitchurch Church of England Primary School, penetration sealing fits best at the end of the summer works.
Questions to ask before you book
- How the existing material will be dealt with
- Will CSCS-carded applicators be on site?
- Proof of insurance

Fire stopping for commercial buildings in Whitchurch
Most of our fire stopping work happens after the building is up. Each new cable, pipe or data route cut through a fire-resisting wall leaves an opening behind, and they are easy to forget. We close the openings listed on your schedule, using the specified sealant and detail. We work on cable penetrations, service gaps in risers and linear gaps at wall heads, and the failures we’re asked to look at most are builders’ foam or ordinary silicone in compartment walls and service penetrations left open after M&E works. A single leaking joint is often how a building in Whitchurch first comes to us: we check the joints around it and give you an honest view of what needs doing now and what can wait.
Buildings in a smaller place such as Whitchurch that need fire-rated sealing are typically schools, care homes, surgeries, small offices and flats over shops. Around those penetrations, fire-rated sealant is installed if specified, with depth, backing and gap all as tested.
We stand by our work: 12 months, guaranteed. That covers our preparation and application, and we come back if anything isn’t right.

Fire stopping around Whitchurch: points for this area
Whitchurch lies roughly 57 miles out from central London. Office refits around the commuter belt bring new cabling through fire-resisting walls. Fire stopping of openings and penetrations in England falls under Approved Document B. From 2 September 2029, BS 476 references are being taken out of Approved Document B, leaving BS EN 13501-2 classification as the route, subject to the Government’s transitional arrangements. Either way, we install the specified product to its tested detail.
In a building such as Church of All Hallows, any service penetration through a fire-resisting wall should be sealed to the specified detail. On estates like Ardglen Industrial Estate (less than half a mile north-west of Whitchurch), the wall between office and warehouse is often fire-resisting, and cables through it need the specified seal.
Whitchurch is about 6 miles east of Andover, in Hampshire. We cover Whitchurch and the rest of Hampshire, and jobs here get the same fixed quote and 12-month guarantee as anywhere else. Our Hampshire coverage takes in 723 places. Sites around Southampton have their own page, about 22 miles away.

Diagnose, treat, sign off
When we get to site, we sign in, go through any site induction and check how permits are handled. Floors, finishes and fittings next to the joints are covered before any cutting starts, and the work normally takes a single visit for a short list of penetrations, or a phased programme for a whole building. Work in places the size of Whitchurch is planned as a single visit where we can. Clear photos and measurements help us bring the right products.
- We ask for the product and detail your designer has specified.
- Openings are measured and grouped by detail.
- Old or wrong materials are cut out.
- Where the detail needs backing, it goes in at the stated depth.
- Fire-rated or intumescent sealant goes in around the services and is tooled off.
- We walk the completed areas with you and confirm the records agreed at quote stage.
What we need from you
- Move anything stored against the joints
- Point out parking and an unloading spot
- Tell us what induction or permit system the site runs

Leave it or put it right?
An improvised seal can look finished while offering no tested performance. Correcting it means cutting it out and starting again with the specified product, so it makes sense to get it right first time. For buildings in places like Whitchurch, one well-planned visit beats several small ones, so we’d suggest renewing all the joints that are going, not just the worst.
Quantities, awkward access and phased working all shape the price. So do site requirements such as inductions and permits.

What we can’t put right
We check first that sealant really is the fix. It isn’t the answer for:
- Plastic pipes whose detail calls for a collar or wrap
- Deciding what a wall or floor needs, which belongs to the designer
- Signing off or certifying a building’s fire stopping
If in doubt, phone 01277 525 020 or email the details over and we’ll say what we think.
Surfaces we seal
- Service gaps in risers
- Linear gaps at wall heads
- Pipe penetrations
- Cable penetrations
- Joints between fire-resisting walls and floors
- Small duct penetrations where the tested detail allows
Surface by surface
Small ducts
Small ductwork can sometimes be sealed with sealant where the tested detail includes it. Larger or fire-rated ductwork usually needs a different solution set by the designer and we flag that rather than guess.
Linear joints
Linear joints run along the head of a wall, at a slab edge or between two fire-resisting elements. BS EN 1366-4 testing sets the joint widths, depths, backing and movement a seal covers, and we work within it.
Looking after the joints
After handover, a little attention goes a long way:
- Leave fire sealant to cure fully before covering it
- Include service cupboards in routine inspections
- Don’t let anyone top up a fire seal with the wrong product
- Report damaged or disturbed seals as soon as they’re spotted
Once the seals are in, tell other trades they exist and must not be disturbed. If a seal has to be opened for a new service, it should be reinstated to the same detail, by someone who knows the system.
Write fire stopping into the scope of any work crossing a compartment wall or floor. That way the opening is sealed while the trade and access are still there.
Questions about Whitchurch
How does the move away from BS 476 affect penetration seals in Whitchurch?
From 2 September 2029, Approved Document B drops its BS 476 references in favour of BS EN 13501-2 classification, with transitional arrangements. Whichever applies, we install the specified product to its tested detail; the specification is for the designer to set.
Is Whitchurch off your patch?
Not at all: smaller places are covered as well as towns. London and every South East county are within our area. Good photographs up front let us bring everything on the first visit.
How long before the joints can be used?
That comes down to the sealant and the temperature. Some take light use quickly, others need longer to cure, so we’ll confirm the curing time on the day.
Can you follow the specification on our project?
Yes. The specification and the manufacturer’s installation guidance are what we work to, and any queries are raised before we start.
Do you have public liability insurance?
Yes. Mastic Doctor is fully insured, public liability included.
Do your applicators hold CSCS cards?
Yes. We use CSCS-carded applicators, which many sites require.
What hours do you work?
Mention the site’s hours and access windows in your enquiry, and we’ll plan around them. You can reach the office between 8am and 5pm, Monday to Friday.
