Fire stopping near Firgo

Photos, a specification or a quick description of the joints is enough to start a fixed quote.

Looking after the joints

Problems stay small when the joints are checked regularly. Specifically:

  • Settle who seals which penetrations at the start of a project
  • Foam or ordinary sealant is never a fire-seal repair
  • Get seals inspected before ceilings and boxing close
  • Keep product data and details in the fire safety file

After every round of M&E works, check that the openings created have been sealed. A short check at the end of each job saves a long hunt later.

Regular walk-rounds of service areas are worth the time. A cracked or disturbed seal found early is a small job.

How we handle fire stopping in Firgo

We are commercial sealant applicators, CHAS accredited and a Constructionline member, with CSCS-carded applicators on site. We hold no third-party fire-stopping installer certificate and we’d rather say that up front. What we offer is careful installation of the specified sealant to its tested detail, with a 12-month guarantee on our workmanship. We work on pipe penetrations, cable penetrations and service gaps in risers, and what we’re called in for most is open linear gaps along the top of fire-resisting walls and seals disturbed by maintenance and left open. A single leaking joint is often how a building in Firgo first comes to us: we look at the rest while we’re there and tell you what we find.

Around smaller places like Firgo, penetration seals come up in schools, halls, pubs with rooms, care homes and farm buildings used as offices. Any service penetration through those walls should be closed with the specified product, set out as its test evidence shows.

A 12-month guarantee applies to all our work. Should something we installed fail, give us a call on 01277 525 020 or email a schedule or drawings and we’ll come back to it.

Your questions answered

Is Firgo too far out for you?

Not at all. Firgo is within our area. We cover Greater London and the counties of the South East. Good photographs up front let us bring everything on the first visit.

Can you work at a site such as Ardglen Industrial Estate, by Firgo?

Yes. Our area takes in Firgo and its surroundings, with estates and business parks such as Ardglen Industrial Estate included. Send details of the unit and the work through our quote form for a quick quote.

Which sealant will you use?

Where there’s a specification, we use the product it names. If not, we choose for the movement, the surfaces and the conditions, in line with the manufacturer’s guidance.

Will you write the fire-stopping specification?

No. The specification comes from your designer, fire engineer or building control. Our role is installing what they specify, to the product’s tested detail.

How long does a job like this take?

It depends on the scope, though a typical visit usually takes longer where risers, ceiling voids or occupied floors have to be worked through in sequence. Larger or phased jobs take longer, and we will give you a timescale with the quote.

Do you hold third-party fire-stopping installer certification?

No, and we’d rather be clear about that. Third-party schemes aren’t a legal requirement, but many clients and main contractors ask for them, so it’s worth checking what your contract says. Where it isn’t required, we install the specified sealant to the maker’s details.

Can you work to our specification?

Yes. We follow the specification, along with the manufacturer’s installation guidance, and we raise anything unclear before work begins.

Cost factors for service penetrations

Sealant work doesn’t have a standard rate, since sites vary so much. What we take into account:

  • How much existing material needs removing
  • Which sealant the job calls for
  • Distance, for remote addresses
  • Backing rod, priming and other preparation

The price depends on the quantity of joints, how much old material needs removing and the access. Call for a quote when you are ready.

Sending details for a quote

We can often quote from photos and a few details. It helps to include:

  • Where the site is, with the postcode
  • Asbestos survey details if the building is older
  • Approximate linear metres or a joint schedule
  • Any specification or named product

Tell us about the building, the joints and when you need the work done, and a fixed quote will follow. To get it moving, ring 01277 525 020 or use the quote form.

Where services cross fire walls in Firgo

Firgo lies roughly 58 miles out from central London. Office refits around the commuter belt bring new cabling through fire-resisting walls, and the gaps need sealing with the specified product. Approved Document B is the English guidance that covers fire stopping around openings and penetrations. References to the older BS 476 classes are being removed from it from 2 September 2029, after which the European classification, BS EN 13501-2, is the route, subject to transitional arrangements. Our part stays the same: the specified product, installed to its tested detail.

In a building such as Church of St Mary, any service penetration through a fire-resisting wall should be sealed to the specified detail. Industrial units on estates such as Ardglen Industrial Estate (to the north of Firgo) often separate offices from warehouse space with fire-resisting walls, and new services through them need the specified seal. In a school such as Testbourne Community School, fire-rated sealant goes in around service penetrations where it is specified.

Firgo is about 6 miles east of Andover, in Hampshire. We cover Firgo and the rest of Hampshire, with the same fixed quotes and 12-month guarantee as everywhere else. We work across 723 places in Hampshire, from busy centres to rural villages. There’s a separate page for Southampton, about 20 miles away.

Commercial sites across RG28 are covered. We also cover Hurstbourne Priors (2 miles north-west), Whitchurch (2 miles north), Wells-in-the-Field (2 miles north-east), Freefolk (3 miles north-east) and Cole Henley (4 miles north). Bigger towns within reach include Basingstoke (11 miles north-east), Winchester (10 miles south), Andover (6 miles west), Chandler's Ford (15 miles south), Tadley (13 miles north-east) and Hyde (9 miles south).

What happens if it’s left?

Open service penetrations matter on ordinary days, not just in a fire: smoke, noise and draughts pass through them every day. The specified fire seal closes the gap for all of these and the building feels the difference. Converted and older buildings near places like Firgo tend to move, and aged sealant cracks. A sealant with the right movement capability, correctly sized, lasts far better.

Small jobs and large programmes are priced from the same things: what’s in scope, how we reach it, what’s specified and when it needs doing. Call for a quote and we will put a fixed figure on it.

Why us?

What we can’t put right

Sealant solves a lot, but not everything, and we’d rather tell you before you spend money. These need a different solution:

  • Large openings beyond what any sealant detail covers
  • Approving the work on behalf of building control
  • Gaps in walls that were never built as compartment walls

If you are not sure, just give us a call on 01277 525 020 or send details through our quote form and we’ll give you a straight answer.

Where we work in Firgo

  • Linear gaps at wall heads
  • Cable penetrations
  • Pipe penetrations
  • Joints between fire-resisting walls and floors
  • Small duct penetrations where the tested detail allows
  • Service gaps in risers

When to bring in a specialist

The visible bead is only part of the job. Backing rod, primer where specified and a joint designed to move with the building are where general trades tend to cut corners.

Putting right a botched joint often costs more than sealing it well at the start, because the whole bead must be removed and the faces cleaned back again. For that reason, many FMs and contractors use a sealant specialist from the outset.

Diagnose, treat, sign off

We begin with a short walk round with whoever looks after the building, to confirm the scope, the order of work and any areas we must keep clear. Then we strip out anything that has failed, prepare every joint and seal it. Jobs in and around smaller places like Firgo are normally planned as a single visit, so we ask for photos and rough sizes first. That way the right products come on the day.

  1. We read the specification, drawings or penetration schedule you send and ask about anything unclear.
  2. Every penetration is compared with its detail: wall or floor type, service, gap size and depth.
  3. Anything that doesn’t belong in the opening, such as expanding foam or general-purpose filler, is removed.
  4. Mineral wool or other backing goes in wherever the detail asks.
  5. We apply the specified sealant to the depth and around the services as the detail shows.
  6. Openings that need a collar, wrap, batt or other product are flagged to you rather than filled with sealant.
