About our fire stopping in Thrumster
Our applicators are CSCS-carded, and we are CHAS accredited and a Constructionline member. We hold no third-party fire-stopping installer certificate, and we won’t pretend otherwise. We install the specified fire-rated sealant to its tested detail, and our workmanship carries a 12-month guarantee. We work on pipe penetrations, joints between fire-resisting walls and floors and service gaps in risers, and what we’re called in for most is old intumescent sealant that has split away and hidden openings found during inspections. Whether you call it commercial sealant work, mastic application or joint sealing, in Thrumster it comes down to the same thing: failed joints cut out, faces prepared and the right sealant laid to the right depth.
Travel to smaller places like Thrumster is planned so every penetration is sealed on one trip. Photos of the gaps, the services and the wall or floor type help us bring the right products.
We stand by our work with a 12-month guarantee. That covers our preparation and application, and we come back if anything isn’t right.

From enquiry to sign-off
Inspect, seal, sign off: every visit follows that pattern. We inspect the joints and confirm what’s in scope, then we prepare and seal each joint with the specified product, and the job ends with a walk round and sign-off. Where we can, we combine work around Thrumster with other jobs nearby. Let us know if your dates have any give.
- We start with your penetration schedule, drawings or specification.
- Access, permits and the order of areas are agreed with the site team.
- Each opening is checked for wall or floor type, service, gap and depth.
- Unsuitable material is removed and the opening cleaned first.
- Backing and fire-rated sealant are installed to the detail and tooled.
- Anything outside the detail is reported to you rather than sealed.
Preparing the site
- Point out any areas we must not close
- Have the specification and drawings to hand
- Share the asbestos register for older buildings

Advice
Your questions answered
How do the Scottish rules apply to fire-rated sealing in Thrumster?
Under Scotland’s non-domestic Technical Handbook (clause 2.1.14), service penetrations should keep at least the wall or floor’s fire resistance duration, using products tested for their end use. We install what has been specified, to the manufacturer’s tested detail, while design and approval sit with the designer and the verifier.
Is Thrumster too small for you to travel to?
Not at all. Thrumster is within our area. We cover the whole of Scotland. We plan jobs in smaller places so return trips are kept to a minimum.
Can you send site paperwork?
Let us know which documents the site needs, such as RAMS, an insurance certificate or CSCS details, and we’ll confirm them with the quote.
Can you work while the building is occupied?
Usually, yes. We phase the work so most of the building stays in use, with each area protected and signed.
What’s the quickest route to a quote?
There are four steps: send details, receive a fixed quote, we carry out the work, and it’s guaranteed. Step one needs little more than photographs and a postcode.
Will you just go over the old sealant?
No. Overlaying old sealant is a frequent cause of early failure, so it all comes out first.
Does the weather affect the work?
Outside, yes. Sealant needs a dry joint and a temperature within the product’s range, so frost, rain or cold mornings can delay outside work. Inside work is seldom held up.
Surface by surface
Cables and cable bundles
New data and power cables are the most common breach we see. We reseal around them to the specified detail, and any bundle too large for sealant alone is flagged.
Drylining partitions
Plasterboard partitions are tested as a specific construction. We check that the product’s detail covers that partition type and board thickness.

After the work
Problems stay small when the joints are checked regularly. Specifically:
- Don’t let anyone top up a fire seal with the wrong product
- Make fire stopping part of every scope that crosses a fire-resisting wall
- Get seals inspected before ceilings and boxing close
- Settle who seals which penetrations at the start of a project
Don’t patch a fire-rated seal with anything outside its tested detail. Repairs need the same product and detail as the original.
Regular walk-rounds of service areas are worth the time. A cracked or disturbed seal found early is a small job compared with dozens found at once.
General trades versus a specialist
Using site staff can make sense for a small touch-up, but larger jobs are different: a specialist works through quantities efficiently, leaves a consistent finish and backs it with a 12-month guarantee.
The visible bead is only part of the job. Backing rod, primer where specified and a joint designed to move with the building are where general trades tend to cut corners.
Signs you need fire stopping in Thrumster
Plenty of openings were simply never closed. Inspections, refurbishments and ceiling access typically bring them to light.
Things that usually lead to an enquiry:
- Improvised or mixed-product fire seals
- Fire-stopping items raised at inspection or handover
- Service penetrations left open after M&E works
- Expanding foam used as fire stopping
Large healthcare estates like Wick Town and County Hospital (to the north-east of Thrumster) change their services often, so penetration seals are worth checking after M&E work.

Leave it or put it right?
Sealing behind the M&E trades area by area beats a sweep at the end. While the area is still open, every opening is easy to see and reach. In Scotland, wind-driven rain finds a failed joint quickly, so it’s worth renewing joints around Thrumster before they leak.
