Fire stopping in Stoer
On a fit-out or refurbishment, we follow the services contractors floor by floor. We work from your penetration schedule or marked-up drawings alongside the manufacturer’s details. Tell us what records you need and we will confirm with the quote. If you have seals that don’t match their tested detail and old intumescent sealant that has split away, we can put it right, whatever the surface. Facilities teams, main contractors and managing agents in Stoer tend to want the same three things: a fixed quote, no surprises on site and a 12-month guarantee behind the result.
Travel to smaller places like Stoer is planned so every penetration is sealed on one trip. Photos of the gaps, the services and the wall or floor type help us bring the right products.
We stand by our work: 12 months, guaranteed. It covers how we prepared and applied the sealant, and we come back if anything isn’t right.

How the quote is worked out
The price varies from site to site. Expect it to depend on:
- The site’s rules and procedures
- How accessible the joints are
- Specialist products, such as fire-rated or hygienic sealants
- Removal of failed or old sealant
The specified product makes a difference, and so does the preparation, from cutting out to priming and backing rod. Access, phasing and site rules also count.
Before you send an enquiry
A good diagnosis starts with the right details. Tell us:
- Rough lengths or quantities, or drawings if you have them
- The asbestos register, for older buildings
- When you need the work done
- The site address and postcode
Send us photos, drawings or a joint schedule are often enough for a fixed quote. Where a site visit makes more sense, we will arrange one.
When it isn’t the sealant
We seal joints; we don’t mend everything behind them. On its own, sealant can’t deal with:
- Plastic pipes whose detail calls for a collar or wrap
- Deciding what a wall or floor needs, which belongs to the designer
- Construction that lacks the fire resistance the seal relies on
Not sure which it is? You can call 01277 525 020 or email the details over and we will tell you honestly.
What we seal
- Cable penetrations
- Small duct penetrations where the tested detail allows
- Joints between fire-resisting walls and floors
- Service gaps in risers
- Pipe penetrations
- Linear gaps at wall heads
When to bring in a specialist
General builders and handymen seal joints, but it isn’t their main trade. A specialist brings correct preparation, depth control with backing rod and a product suited to that particular joint, which is what makes a joint last.
Paperwork matters too. Main contractors and clients often ask for CSCS cards, RAMS and insurance details, and our CSCS-carded applicators are used to working under those rules.
From enquiry to sign-off
At the end of each section, we remove the tape, clean down and inspect every joint with your site contact. If an area should be left alone while the sealant cures, we say how long and put signs out. Jobs near Stoer are often grouped with others in the same area, to make the most of each trip. Let us know if your dates have any give.
- First we go through the drawings, schedule or specification for the seals and raise any questions before we price.
- On site, each opening is checked against the tested detail it is meant to follow.
- Unsuitable fillers and loose debris are taken out of each opening.
- Mineral wool or other backing goes in wherever the detail asks.
- Fire-rated or intumescent sealant is gunned in to the specified depth, then tooled.
- If an opening needs something other than sealant, we tell you instead of improvising.
Before we start on site
- Share the asbestos register for older buildings
- Tell us which areas need to stay in use
- Tell us what induction or permit system the site runs
Request a quote

Service penetrations in Stoer buildings
Scotland has its own building standards: the non-domestic Technical Handbook (clause 2.1.14) says service penetrations should be fire stopped to at least the fire resistance duration of the wall or floor, with proprietary products, intumescent ones included, tested for their end use. We install what’s specified, to the product’s tested detail.
Buildings near Stoer get the fire-rated product that’s specified, installed to its tested detail. For any site around Stoer, we work to the specification and the manufacturer’s installation guidance, leaving design and sign-off with the designer.

Stoer: questions and answers
Can you produce the fire-stopping design for a job in Stoer?
No. The designer or fire engineer sets the detail and building control accepts it. Our part is installing the specified product to its tested detail, and telling you if the detail calls for something other than sealant.
Is Stoer too far out for you?
No. Small places get the same service as large ones. Every Scottish council area is within our area. Good photographs up front let us bring everything on the first visit.
Will you come and look before quoting?
Many jobs can be quoted from photographs, drawings or a joint schedule. Where they aren’t, we arrange a site visit.
When can the area be used after sealing?
The product and site conditions decide that. Some products skin over quickly but need longer to cure fully, and we confirm it before leaving site.
What happens if old sealant might contain asbestos?
The duty to manage asbestos sits with the building’s dutyholder, so for older buildings we ask for the asbestos register first. Work pauses if suspect material is found, until it has been tested.
Can you fit around our working hours?
The office is staffed Monday to Friday, from 8am until 5pm. Tell us your site hours and access windows and the work will be fitted around them.
Do you hold CHAS accreditation?
Yes. Mastic Doctor is CHAS accredited and a Constructionline member.
What happens if it’s left?
Sealing behind the M&E trades area by area beats a sweep at the end. While the area is still open, every opening is easy to see and reach and each detail can be checked as we go. Buildings that aren’t in daily use, such as halls and seasonal premises, may let water in unnoticed, giving water time to get in. Early resealing prevents it.
Access often affects the price as much as the sealing: joints within easy reach take less time than ones that need access equipment. Tell us how the joints are reached and call for a quote.
