Fire stopping in Gourock, done properly
Facilities managers in Gourock often find open service penetrations when ceilings come down for other work. If a specification already covers those walls and floors, we can reseal to it. With no specification in place, the first step sits with your designer or fire engineer, not with us. We work on small duct penetrations where the tested detail allows, linear gaps at wall heads and service gaps in risers, and the failures we are asked to look at most are openings found when ceilings come down for a refit and service penetrations left open after M&E works. Sealant applicators who only do sealant are a different proposition from a general trade with a gun in the van: in Gourock, that means joint design, primers and backing rod as standard.
In smaller Scottish places like Gourock, buildings with fire-resisting walls typically include schools, care homes, hotels and health centres. Those penetrations are closed with the product the specification names, built up as tested.
The 12-month guarantee covers our workmanship: the preparation, the sealing and the tooling. Damage, later alterations by others and movement beyond what the joint was designed for sit outside it.

When to bring in a specialist
What you see is the finished bead, but most of the work is hidden. Backing rod, primer where specified and a joint designed to move with the building are easy to get wrong without experience.
Certain joints really need a specialist: fire-rated seals that must follow a tested detail, trafficked floor joints and external movement joints among them. A poor seal in places like these tends to cost more to put right later.
What sets the cost
We price every job individually. The things that drive the figure:
- How much existing material needs removing
- Specialist products, such as fire-rated or hygienic sealants
- Joint width, depth and condition
- Location, for remote and island sites
The price depends on how many linear metres there are, how much old material needs removing and the access. Call for a fixed quote when you’re ready.
What to include in your enquiry
To price the job accurately, we need to understand the site. Useful things to include:
- Whether the building will be occupied during the work
- When you need the work done
- Photos of the joints, close up and from further back
- The asbestos register, for older buildings
Send details, get a quote, we seal, guaranteed: that’s how every job runs. The first step is to call the office on 01277 525 020 or use the quote form with what you know.
Where services cross fire walls in Gourock
Scottish guidance (non-domestic Technical Handbook, clause 2.1.14) asks that penetrations match at least the fire resistance period of the element they pass through, using products tested for the way they’re used. We install fire-rated sealant to that tested detail where it is specified.
Workshops and IT rooms at colleges like West College Scotland - Greenock Campus, 1.9 miles to the east of Gourock, are re-serviced often, leaving penetrations to seal. In a hotel such as Spinnaker Hotel, which lies west of Gourock, new pipework or cabling through bedroom and corridor walls needs sealing with the specified product. In a retail centre such as Oak Mall, which lies east of Gourock, any fire-resisting wall between units that is crossed by new services needs sealing to the tested detail.
Gourock is about 2 miles north-west of Greenock, in Inverclyde. Our applicators travel to Gourock for work on service penetrations. Across Inverclyde, 19 places are covered, Gourock among them. Glasgow is covered too, some 22 miles away.
If you need fire stopping in PA19 and PA16, the process matches everywhere else we work: send details, get a quote, we seal, guaranteed. We cover commercial and managed buildings on Station Road, Henderson Terrace and Darroch Drive and the roads nearby. You’ll find Gourock on or near the A770 and A771. If your building is just outside Gourock, we cover Midton (1 mile west), Ashton (1 mile south-west), Braeside (1 mile south), Branchton (1 mile south) and Trumpethill (1 mile west). Questions about Gourock
How do the Scottish rules apply to fire-rated sealing in Gourock?
Under Scotland’s non-domestic Technical Handbook (clause 2.1.14), service penetrations should keep at least the wall or floor’s fire resistance duration, using products tested for their end use. The detail is set by the designer and goes through the warrant process; we install the specified product to its tested detail.
Would you work within a site like Inverclyde Royal Hospital?
Yes, hospitals are one of the sectors we cover. Before anything starts, the estates team agrees permits, inductions and infection-control measures with us.
Do you need to see the site first?
Photos, drawings or a schedule are often enough to quote. If the job needs a look first, we’ll arrange a visit.
How long does a job like this take?
We plan the time on site around your programme and access. We will give you an estimate of time on site when we quote.
Do you hold CHAS accreditation?
Yes. Mastic Doctor is CHAS accredited and a Constructionline member.
Do you take on multi-site work?
Yes. A group of buildings can go on one quote, and you deal with one contact throughout across South East England, Greater London and Scotland.
Is any job too small?
We quote for single jobs as well as large packages and programmes. Photos and a description are enough to start.
Surface by surface
Small ducts
Small ductwork can sometimes be sealed with sealant where the tested detail includes it. Larger or fire-rated ductwork normally needs a different solution set by the designer.
Cables and cable bundles
Cable penetrations are frequently sealed with fire-rated sealant where the detail allows. Bundle size, cable type and the space between cables all matter.
Maintenance after handover
After handover, these steps help:
- Arrange inspection before areas are covered up
- Record which product was used where
- Foam or ordinary sealant is never a fire-seal repair
- Brief every trade that openings they make must be sealed
Add risers, plant rooms and ceiling voids to routine fire-stopping checks. Look for cracks, unsealed new cables and gaps that have been enlarged, and report them promptly.
Write fire stopping into the scope of any work crossing a compartment wall or floor. Then the seal goes in while the area is open, not months later.
Leave it or put it right?
The longer openings stay, the more there tend to be: every new cable or pipe adds another. A schedule that is dealt with regularly stays manageable and avoids a much larger catch-up later. Buildings that aren’t in daily use, such as halls and seasonal premises, may let water in unnoticed, so a failed joint has time to cause damage. Resealing early avoids that.
Access can matter as much as the joints themselves: easy-to-reach joints are quicker than those that need equipment to get to. Tell us how the joints are reached and call for a quote.

On site: what to expect
Working in a building that stays open takes some planning. We sign and contain the area we are in, with routes through the building left open and move on in phases so staff and visitors can carry on around us. Where we can, we combine work around Gourock with other jobs nearby. Let us know if your dates have any give.
- First we go through the drawings, schedule or specification for the seals.
- Every penetration is compared with its detail: wall or floor type, service, gap size and depth.
- Unsuitable fillers and loose debris are taken out of each opening.
- Mineral wool or other backing goes in wherever the detail asks.
- Fire-rated or intumescent sealant is gunned in to the specified depth, then tooled.
- If an opening needs something other than sealant, we tell you instead of improvising.
