Fire stopping in Stronord

Tell us what needs sealing and where, with photos or drawings if you have them, and we’ll price it.

What we can’t put right

Sealant solves a lot, but not everything, and we are upfront when that’s the case. It won’t fix:

  • Construction that lacks the fire resistance the seal relies on
  • Deciding what a wall or floor needs, which belongs to the designer
  • Signing off or certifying a building’s fire stopping

Not sure which it is? You can give us a call on 01277 525 020 or email us and we will tell you honestly.

Joints and surfaces we work on

  • Small duct penetrations where the tested detail allows
  • Cable penetrations
  • Linear gaps at wall heads
  • Pipe penetrations
  • Joints between fire-resisting walls and floors
  • Service gaps in risers

About our fire stopping in Stronord

On a fit-out or refurbishment, we follow the services contractors floor by floor. We work from your penetration schedule or marked-up drawings. Tell us what records you need and we will confirm with the quote. We work on cable penetrations, linear gaps at wall heads and pipe penetrations, and the usual reasons a site gets in touch are service penetrations left open after M&E works and fire-stopping items raised at inspection or handover. A specialist sealant contractor works differently from a general builder: in Stronord, that means joint design, primers and backing rod as standard.

Refurbishments in small hotels, schools and care homes around places like Stronord can leave gaps around new services. A round of checks after M&E work is good practice, and any gaps found are sealed where fire-rated sealant is specified.

We sign every job off with a 12-month guarantee. It’s a plain promise: if the work we did fails within twelve months, we return to fix it.

What we are called out for in Stronord

Plenty of openings were simply never closed. Inspections, refurbishments and ceiling access normally bring them to light.

Clients normally get in touch after noticing one or more of the following:

  • Builders’ foam or ordinary silicone in compartment walls
  • Unsealed penetrations discovered above suspended ceilings
  • Unsealed joints where partitions meet the slab
  • Penetration schedules that need working through

Hospital estates such as Newton Stuart Hospital (2.9 miles west of Stronord) are divided into fire compartments, and any service penetration through them should be sealed to the specified, tested detail.

Before you book anyone

  • Their public liability cover
  • Their plan for phasing and protecting the area
  • Whether primer will be used where the manufacturer specifies it
  • Their pre-qualification and accreditations

Our contractor checklist

For managing agents and facilities managers

Hospitality, education, healthcare, office and retail clients book us directly too. We plan around the way the building is used, so guests, pupils, patients or staff are disturbed as little as possible.

Facilities managers want contractors who arrive with the paperwork sorted. Tell us what site paperwork you need, such as RAMS, an insurance certificate or CSCS details, and we will confirm with the quote.

Cost factors for service penetrations

A fixed quote reflects the actual work. It takes account of:

  • Phasing around occupants
  • The size and state of each joint
  • Distance, for remote addresses
  • How accessible the joints are

Whether it’s a single area or a whole estate, the same things set the price: scope, access, product and programme. Call for a quote and we will put a fixed figure on it.

Details that help us quote

The more we know, the firmer the quote. When you get in touch, include:

  • Where the site is, with the postcode
  • The type of building and who uses it
  • How the joints are reached, and at what height
  • Any dates the work must fit around

A handful of photographs and a postcode is the fastest way to a quote. Send them through the quote form, or speak to us on 01277 525 020 or use the quote form to discuss it first.

Questions we’re asked in Stronord

Is a smaller place like Stronord outside your area?

No. Places such as Stronord are covered as much as the big towns. We work across every Scottish council area. Good photographs up front let us bring everything on the first visit.

What do Scotland’s building standards say about service penetrations in Stronord?

Scotland’s non-domestic Technical Handbook covers it in clause 2.1.14: penetrations keep at least the element’s fire resistance duration, with products tested for their end use. Design sits with the designer and the verifier; installation to the tested detail is our part.

Are you CHAS accredited?

Yes. We are CHAS accredited and a Constructionline member, which helps with supplier vetting.

How long does a job like this take?

It depends on the scope, but the work normally takes a single visit for a short list of penetrations, or a phased programme for a whole building. Larger or phased jobs take longer, and we will give you a timescale with the quote.

Can you work while the building is occupied?

Yes, with some planning. Tell us your site hours and access windows and we’ll plan around them.

Can you fit around our working hours?

Give us your site hours and any access windows in your enquiry, and we will schedule the work to suit. Our office runs Monday to Friday, 8am until 5pm.

Will your applicators have CSCS cards?

Yes. We use CSCS-carded applicators.

On site: what to expect

Where the site stays busy, we agree a sequence with your contact so the disruption stays in one area at once. Each section is protected, cleaned back and sealed before the next one starts. For work around Stronord, we aim for one trip, so photographs, sizes and a full list matter. Outside work also needs a suitable weather window.

  1. First we go through the drawings, schedule or specification for the seals.
  2. On site, each opening is checked against the tested detail it is meant to follow.
  3. Unsuitable fillers and loose debris are taken out of each opening.
  4. We fit the backing the detail asks for, to the stated depth.
  5. Fire-rated or intumescent sealant is gunned in to the specified depth, then tooled.
  6. If an opening needs something other than sealant, we tell you instead of improvising.

Preparing the site

  • Clear stock, furniture or equipment away from the joints
  • Let us know about inductions and permits
  • Tell us which areas need to stay in use

Doing it in-house

Putting right a botched joint often costs more than sealing it well at the start, since all of it has to come out and the faces be cleaned back again. For that reason, many FMs and contractors use a sealant specialist from the outset.

There’s also the paperwork. Many sites expect CSCS cards, RAMS and proof of insurance, and our CSCS-carded applicators are used to working under those rules.

Fire stopping around Stronord: how the place shapes the job

In Scotland, clause 2.1.14 of the non-domestic Technical Handbook expects service penetrations to keep at least the fire resistance duration of the wall or floor, with proprietary products, intumescent ones included, tested for their end use.
