Need fire stopping in Falkland?

Tell us what needs sealing and where, with photos or drawings if you have them, and we’ll price it.

When to call us in Falkland

Fire stopping can get squeezed at the end of a programme, or done by whoever is on site. That is when untested combinations creep in, which then have to be put right.

Any of the following is a good reason to get the joints checked over:

  • Fire-rated sealant that has cracked or shrunk back
  • Snag lists that include open service penetrations
  • Fire seals cut back for extra cables and never reinstated
  • Hidden openings found during inspections

On a hospital site such as Glenrothes Hospital, 3.4 miles to the south of Falkland, fire-rated sealant goes in where the specification calls for it, with the work planned around the estates team’s permits.

What your quote should include

  • What level of public liability insurance do they hold?
  • Will failed sealant be removed rather than covered?
  • Their pre-qualification and accreditations
  • Which product they’ll use, and why it suits the joint

How we handle fire stopping in Falkland

A lot of fire-stopping work comes after M&E installation, a refit or a tenant fit-out. New cable runs, replaced pipework and extra data routes all punch holes in compartment walls. We close the openings listed on your schedule, using the specified sealant and detail. If you’re dealing with damaged fire seals in risers and voids and old intumescent sealant that has split away, we can put it right. Sealant contractors, mastic applicators, sealant specialists: whatever the job title on the order, the work in Falkland is the same: the right product in a properly prepared joint.

Refurbishments in small hotels, schools and care homes around places like Falkland can leave gaps around new services. A round of checks after M&E work is good practice, and any gaps found are sealed where fire-rated sealant is specified.

Our workmanship is guaranteed for 12 months, wherever the site is. If our installation lets you down in that time, we return and fix it.

For managing agents and facilities managers

Agents, factors and owners’ representatives all follow the same route: send the details, accept a fixed quote, and we carry out and guarantee the work. We can agree access arrangements and keyholder contacts beforehand.

We work for building owners and managing agents on sealant work across single buildings or whole portfolios. One quote can cover more than one site, which keeps the paperwork simple.

Fire stopping in Falkland: the local picture

Under the Scottish non-domestic Technical Handbook, clause 2.1.14, penetrations should be fire stopped to at least the wall or floor’s fire resistance duration, and products should be tested for their end use. Where fire-rated sealant is specified, that’s what we install, to the tested detail. A number of hotels sit less than 2 miles from Falkland. A hotel refit often runs new services through compartment walls between bedrooms and corridors, and each opening needs the specified seal.

Hotels such as Falkland Arms Hotel (to the north-west of Falkland) rely on fire-resisting walls between bedrooms and corridors, and refits that add services leave penetrations to seal where fire-rated sealant is specified.

Falkland is about 4 miles north of Glenrothes, in Fife. We send applicators to Falkland for service penetrations, handled exactly as we handle every other area. Our Fife coverage takes in 132 places, from busy centres to rural villages. Sites around Dundee have their own page, roughly 18 miles from Falkland.

We take on service penetrations across the KY15 postcode area, for business premises of every kind. Among the streets we cover are Horse Market Street, High Street and The Fleurs. You will find Falkland on or near the A912, so getting applicators and materials to site is simple. If your building is just outside Falkland, we cover Newton of Falkland (1 mile east), Freuchie (2 miles east), Dunshalt (2 miles north), Collydean (3 miles south) and Auchtermuchty (3 miles north-west). Bigger towns within reach include Dunfermline (15 miles south-west), Kirkcaldy (9 miles south), Glenrothes (4 miles south), Leven (9 miles south-east), Cowdenbeath (11 miles south-west) and Dysart (9 miles south).

How a job runs

A typical day starts with protection: tape along each joint edge and covers over finishes, stock and equipment close by. The work itself normally takes a single visit for a short list of penetrations, or a phased programme for a whole building, and our waste is bagged and taken away as we go. For a building near Falkland, directions, keys and a contact on the day are worth sorting early. We’ll confirm the plan with the fixed quote.

  1. We ask for the product and detail your designer has specified.
  2. Openings are measured and grouped by detail.
  3. Old or wrong materials are cut out.
  4. Where the detail needs backing, it goes in at the stated depth.
  5. Fire-rated or intumescent sealant goes in around the services and is tooled off.
  6. We walk the completed areas with you and confirm the records agreed at quote stage.

Getting the site ready

  • Point out parking and an unloading spot
  • Tell us what induction or permit system the site runs
  • Have the specification and drawings to hand

Getting a fixed quote

Photos, drawings or a schedule of the joints are often enough for a fixed quote. Where a site visit makes more sense, we’ll arrange one.

Falkland: questions and answers

Do you seal service penetrations in hotels around Falkland?

Yes, where the specification calls for fire-rated sealant. Each seal follows the tested detail, and rooms are done in turn.

How do the Scottish rules apply to fire-rated sealing in Falkland?

Under Scotland’s non-domestic Technical Handbook (clause 2.1.14), service penetrations should keep at least the wall or floor’s fire resistance duration, using products tested for their end use. We install what has been specified, to the manufacturer’s tested detail, while design and approval sit with the designer and the verifier.

Can the sealant be colour-matched?

It depends on the product. Some ranges offer many colours, others very few, so we will confirm the colours available for the specified product with the quote.

Are you CHAS accredited?

Yes. Mastic Doctor is CHAS accredited and a Constructionline member.

When can the area be used after sealing?

The product and site conditions decide that. Some take light use quickly, others need longer to cure, so we’ll confirm the curing time on the day.

Does weather matter for sealant work?

It can, when the joints are outside. Wet joints and cold, damp or frosty conditions stop the sealant bonding properly, so we watch the forecast and rearrange outside work if we have to. Indoors, the weather is rarely a problem.

What about RAMS and site documents?

Tell us what site paperwork you need (RAMS, insurance certificate, CSCS details) and we’ll confirm with the quote.

Leave it or put it right?

An improvised seal can look finished while offering no tested performance. Correcting it means cutting it out and starting again with the specified product, so it makes sense to get it right first time. Renewing every failing joint on one visit is the sensible approach for a place like Falkland. Send photographs and we’ll quote for everything together.

What a job costs comes down to the quantity of joints, what has to come out first and how the joints are reached. Call for a fixed quote when you’re ready.

Why appoint us

  • One number for every site we cover
  • Fixed quotes based on photographs, drawings or a visit
  • Public liability insurance in place

What the job involves on each surface

Masonry and concrete

Block walls and concrete floors are common substrates for penetration seals. Dust and loose debris are cleared out of the opening, with backing added if the detail requires it.

Drylining partitions

Plasterboard partitions are tested as a specific construction. The sealant detail has to be tested in that wall type, with the stated board layers.

Maintenance after handover

Your facilities or cleaning team can help the joints last. Share these points with them:

  • Brief every trade that openings they make must be sealed
  • Check risers and ceiling voids after each round of works
  • Foam or ordinary sealant is never a fire-seal repair
  • Ask which product is in place before decorating

After the work, brief anyone else working in the area that the openings are now sealed. Any seal cut back for a new service needs reinstating to its tested detail using the same product.

Write fire stopping into the scope of any work crossing a compartment wall or floor. That way the opening is sealed while the trade and access are still there instead of being left for someone else.
