Fire stopping for Canada sites

Photos, a specification or a quick description of the joints is enough to start a fixed quote.

How we handle fire stopping in Canada

Our applicators are CSCS-carded, and we are CHAS accredited and a Constructionline member. We don’t hold a third-party fire-stopping installer certificate. What we offer is careful installation of the specified sealant to its tested detail, with a 12-month guarantee on our workmanship. If you have unsealed penetrations discovered above suspended ceilings and openings left by services added after handover, we can put it right, whatever the surface. A single leaking joint is often how a building in Canada first comes to us: we look at the rest while we are there and tell you what we find.

Around smaller places like Canada, penetration seals come up in schools, halls, pubs with rooms, care homes and farm buildings used as offices. If sealant is what the specification names, we install it around the services exactly as the maker’s detail sets out.

We stand by our work with a 12-month guarantee. It covers how we prepared and applied the sealant.

Why deal with it now?

Inspections and handover checks often pick up fire stopping. Finding unsealed or improvised openings late can hold up a programme. One visit to deal with every failing joint makes more sense than several trips to a place like Canada, rather than one at a time. Photos of every joint help us quote for the whole job.

Access can matter as much as the joints themselves: joints within easy reach take less time than ones that need access equipment. Tell us how the joints are reached and call for a quote.

Surface by surface

Masonry and concrete

Openings through concrete vary from tidy cores to rough break-outs. Each gap is measured where it is widest against the detail’s limits, and any outside it are raised with you.

Linear joints

Linear joints run along the head of a wall, at a slab edge or between two fire-resisting elements. BS EN 1366-4 testing sets the joint widths, depths, backing and movement a seal covers.

General trades versus a specialist

A short, simple internal joint is often within reach of a maintenance team. Where it goes wrong is preparation: sealing over old material, sealing onto damp or dusty surfaces, or a product that can’t take the movement.

For a quick touch-up, site staff may be fine, but anything bigger is another matter: a specialist brings efficiency, a consistent finish and a 12-month guarantee.

Our process

At the end of each section, we remove the tape, clean down and inspect every joint, ready for your sign-off. Where the sealant needs time to cure before use, we tell you and sign the area. For a building around Canada, tell us how to find it and who will meet us. Add it to your enquiry and we’ll build it into the plan.

  1. First we confirm the product and tested details named in the specification.
  2. We sort the openings by the detail each one needs.
  3. Improvised fillers and failed sealant are removed.
  4. Where the detail needs backing, it goes in at the stated depth.
  5. Fire-rated or intumescent sealant goes in around the services and is tooled off.
  6. We walk the completed areas with you and confirm the records agreed at quote stage.

What we need from you

  • For older buildings, check the asbestos register before work
  • Agree which areas must stay open
  • Send any specification or drawings in advance

Request a quote

Every job follows the same four steps: send details, get a quote, we seal, guaranteed. The first step is to call 01277 525 020 or email drawings and photos with what you know.

Advice

Cost factors for service penetrations

What shapes the price:

  • Access and working height
  • Induction, permit and paperwork requirements
  • Quantities, in metres or numbers
  • Removal of failed or old sealant

We don’t publish prices, since every building and every scope is different. Call for a quote and we will price your job on its own details.

Before you send an enquiry

Good information means a firmer quote. Helpful details to send:

  • Where the site is, with the postcode
  • Any specification or named product
  • Clear photos of the problem areas
  • Rough lengths or quantities, or drawings if you have them

Send us photographs, drawings or a joint schedule are often enough for a fixed quote. If the job needs a look first, we’ll arrange a site visit.

Service penetrations in Canada buildings

For England, the fire stopping of penetrations is dealt with in Approved Document B. Its BS 476 references are being withdrawn from 2 September 2029, with BS EN 13501-2 classification taking over, subject to transitional arrangements. We install whatever has been specified, to the product’s tested detail.

For a school such as Wellow School, penetration sealing fits best at the end of the summer works. Theatres, wards and plant rooms at sites like Tatchbury Mount Hospital (to the south-east of Canada) all have compartment walls crossed by services. Industrial units on estates such as Giles Lane Industrial Estate, 1.5 miles to the north-west of Canada, often separate offices from warehouse space with fire-resisting walls, and new services through them need the specified seal.

Canada is about 5 miles north-west of Totton, in Hampshire. We cover Canada, and jobs here get the same fixed quote and 12-month guarantee as anywhere else. We work across 723 places in Hampshire. There’s a separate page for Southampton, about 9 miles away.

Commercial sites across SO51 are covered. If your building is just outside Canada, we cover West Wellow (1 mile north), Blackhill (1 mile east), East Wellow (1 mile east), Newbridge (2 miles south) and Plaitford Green (2 miles north). A short drive away, we cover Winchester (14 miles north-east), Eastleigh (11 miles east), Totton (5 miles south-east), Chandler's Ford (9 miles east), Hedge End (13 miles east) and Lymington (14 miles south).

Local landmarks in Canada

Recent enquiries here include premises near Rockingham Arms and the streets around them. The nearest railway station is Romsey station, about 4.6 miles north-east of the centre. Nearby you’ll also find Tatchbury Mount Hospital (3.5 miles south-east). The countryside around Canada includes Copythorne Common.

Common questions from Canada clients

Can you work at a site such as Giles Lane Industrial Estate, by Canada?

Yes. We cover Canada and the area around it, including industrial estates, business parks and retail parks such as Giles Lane Industrial Estate. A few photos and the unit address let us price the work.

Is Canada off your patch?

Not at all: smaller places are covered as well as towns. We work across Greater London and the South East. Good photos up front let us bring everything on the first visit.

Do you approve fire stopping for building control?

No. Sign-off belongs to the designer or building control, not the installer. We’ll confirm the product and detail installed, and you can tell us what other records you need at quote stage.

Does the weather affect the work?

It can, when the joints are outside. Sealant won’t bond properly to a wet or frosty joint, so we watch the forecast and rearrange outside work if we have to. Internal work is far less affected.

Do you need to see the site first?

It depends on the job. Simple work can often be priced from photos, and bigger or more complex jobs usually get a visit.

Is fire stopping in Scotland covered by different guidance?

Our work covers Greater London, the South East and every Scottish council area. In Scotland, clause 2.1.14 of the non-domestic Technical Handbook says service penetrations should keep at least the fire resistance of the wall or floor.

Do you work to architects’ specifications?

Yes. Send it with your enquiry, and we will price the work to it.

Commercial clients in Canada

Main contractors use us as their sealant subcontractor on new-build and refurbishment projects. Programme, specification and site rules come first, and our applicators hold CSCS cards.

Hotels, schools, healthcare sites, offices and retail units come to us directly as well. The work is planned around how the building runs, so the building keeps working while we do.
