Expansion joint sealing in Hirst, done properly

Width, depth and product all have to work together. Joint width must suit the movement and the movement class of the sealant while depth is limited by backing rod or, in shallow joints, a bond-breaker. For wider joints, the width-to-depth ratio is often around 2:1, as the manufacturer advises, and the bead is tooled so it grips the two faces alone. We work on car park decks and ramps, brickwork movement joints and podiums and floor movement joints, and the usual reasons a site gets in touch are expansion joints split through the centre of the bead and joints where the bead has lost adhesion. Looking for mastic applicators who cover Hirst? We have been sealing commercial buildings since 2005, with CSCS-carded applicators.

In smaller places such as Hirst, the joints we’re asked about sit in workshops, farm sheds, schools and halls. Slabs and yards take vehicles, rain and frost.

A 12-month guarantee applies to all our work in North Lanarkshire. If an installation problem shows up, call the office on 01277 525 020 or use the quote form and we will arrange a return visit.

Questions we’re asked in Hirst

Can you take on a job at a hospital such as Cleland Hospital?

Yes. We work in healthcare settings as well as offices and schools. Each area is agreed with the ward or department and the estates team in advance.

Is Hirst too small for you to travel to?

No. Small places get the same service as large ones. We cover the whole of Scotland. Send photos and a list of what needs doing, and we will plan the job to need as few trips as possible.

Do you need to see the site first?

That depends on the size and complexity of the job. Simple work can often be priced from photos, and bigger or more complex jobs normally get a visit.

Do you use silicone or polyurethane in movement joints?

Movement capability matters most, classified under BS EN ISO 11600. Where two different materials meet, a hybrid sealant can be the better choice.

How long will the joint resealing take?

Expect a few hours to several weeks, depending on how many metres of joint there are and how much old sealant or filler needs removing. We’ll confirm when each area can be used again.

What causes movement joint sealant to fail?

Most often the movement is too much for the product or the joint width. That’s why we check width, depth and movement class before quoting, rather than replacing like for like.

Can you work to our specification?

Yes. We follow the specification, along with the manufacturer’s installation guidance, and we raise anything unclear before work begins.

What the job involves on each surface

Joints between different materials

Hybrid or MS polymer sealants bond to many substrates. We pick the product for the materials and the movement, and confirm it in the quote.

Brickwork and blockwork joints

Vertical movement joints in brick and block walls let the masonry grow and shrink. We use a sealant rated for the movement, normally low-modulus, with backing rod setting the depth.

From enquiry to sign-off

Occupied buildings need a little choreography. We sign and contain the area we are in, with routes through the building left open and work section by section so the rest of the building stays in use. Jobs near Hirst are often grouped with others in the same area. Let us know if your dates have any give.

  1. First, the joints are inspected for width, movement and the type of failure.
  2. A fixed quote follows, naming the sealant and its movement class.
  3. Old sealant and filler are cut out and the joint faces cleaned back to sound material, and we tell you if any edges need repairing first.
  4. Backing rod goes in at the right depth, or bond-breaker tape where the joint is shallow.
  5. Primer goes on where the manufacturer specifies it, followed by the sealant, which is then tooled off.
  6. Each joint is inspected and handed over with our 12-month guarantee.

What we need from you

  • Point out parking and an unloading spot
  • Point out any areas we must not close
  • For older buildings, check the asbestos register before work

Advice

Joints that move: notes for Hirst

Hirst has at least three named business or industrial parks inside a 3-mile radius. That puts plenty of warehouse floors, service yards and car parks close by, all with joints under traffic. Hirst is on Scotland’s drier eastern side. Cold winters and gritting are hard on any yard or deck joint left open. Sealing them in drier months limits winter damage.

Warehouse floors on estates like Harthill Industrial Estate (1.9 miles east of Hirst) carry pallet trucks and forklifts over every saw-cut joint. For an estate such as Cleland Hospital (4.9 miles south-west of Hirst), the joints in ramps, decks and long building elevations all need attention over time.

Hirst is about 6 miles east of Airdrie, in North Lanarkshire. Looking for expansion joint sealing in Hirst? We can help. Our North Lanarkshire coverage takes in 100 places, from busy centres to rural villages. There’s a separate page for Glasgow, about 18 miles away.

Work on movement joints is covered throughout ML7. For a building on South Hirst Road and Hirst Road or nearby, send details and we will quote for movement joints. Sites close to Hirst are covered too, including Eastfield (2 miles east), Shotts (2 miles south), Salsburgh (2 miles west), Harthill (3 miles east) and Torbothie (3 miles south-east). Nearby towns on our patch include Motherwell (8 miles south-west), Cumbernauld (10 miles north-west), Coatbridge (8 miles west), Airdrie (6 miles west), Wishaw (7 miles south-west) and Bellshill (9 miles west).

Around Hirst

The nearest railway station is Shotts station, roughly 2.3 miles south of the centre. Well-known places in the area include Shotts Heritage Centre (2.3 miles south) and Murdostoun Castle (4.6 miles south-west). Not far away are Black Loch.

Building owners, agents and FMs in Hirst

Building owners and managing agents use us on everything from one building to a spread of sites. Several sites can go on one quote, so there’s one set of paperwork to deal with.

FMs need a contractor who is easy to get on site. Let us know the documents you need (RAMS, insurance certificate, CSCS details) and we’ll confirm them with the quote.

What we are called out for in Hirst

Three-sided adhesion is a common cause of early failure. Bonded on three faces, it can’t stretch evenly when the joint opens.

What tends to prompt an enquiry:

  • Expansion joints split through the centre of the bead
  • Brittle, chalky sealant on external joints
  • Debris jammed in movement joints
  • Chipped joint edges on forklift routes

At places like Glenburn Industrial Estate, 2.2 miles to the south of Hirst, joints are sealed a section at a time so operations carry on.

Comparing quotes

  • How the joint faces will be prepared and primed
  • Will failed sealant be removed rather than covered?
  • Their plan for phasing and protecting the area
  • Who will actually carry out the work

How to choose a sealant contractor

Cost factors for movement joints

Before we quote, we look at:

  • The product specified
  • Site requirements such as inductions and permits
  • The size and state of each joint
  • Removal of failed or old sealant

We don’t publish prices, because the scope varies so much from one building to the next. For a fixed figure, call for a quote and we’ll price your job on its own details.

Sending details for a quote

It doesn’t need to be a full survey. These details are enough to start:

  • Whether an asbestos survey exists
  • The postcode of the building
  • The product your specification calls for
  • Access details, including height

Send details, get a quote, we seal, guaranteed: that’s how every job runs. To take the first step, speak to us on 01277 525 020 or email us.

What happens if it’s left?

On a car park, resealing joints in phases keeps the deck open. Work can be planned so parts of the deck stay open without shutting the whole car park. Tell us what has to stay open and we’ll plan around it. Renewing every failing joint on one visit is the sensible approach for a place like Hirst. Send photographs and we’ll quote for everything together.

Small jobs and large programmes are priced from the same things: what’s in scope, how we reach it, what’s specified and when it needs doing. Call for a quote, and you’ll have a fixed figure to work with.
