Coloured sealant in Wick

Window, door and shopfront frames in RAL finishes often need a sealant to suit. We compare the RAL reference with the colours made for the specified sealant, and you approve the choice. If the range has no close colour, a paintable sealant can sometimes be overpainted, where the specification allows. If you’re dealing with discoloured joints on a visible elevation and previous reseals that don’t match the original, we can put it right, whatever the surface. Sealant applicators who only do sealant are a different proposition from a general trade with a gun in the van: in Wick, that means joint design, primers and backing rod as standard.

Around smaller places such as Wick, the commercial buildings tend to be hospitality, local shops, schools, health centres and converted rural buildings. Each has kitchens, washrooms and frames that depend on sound joints.

We sign every job off with a 12-month guarantee. It’s a plain promise: if our work fails within that year, we put it right.

Our process

A typical day starts with protection: masking tape along the joint edges and sheeting over anything nearby. The work itself normally takes a few hours or a phased programme, depending on joint lengths and how many colours are involved, and our waste is bagged and taken away as we go. Where we can, we combine work around Wick with other jobs nearby, to make the most of each trip. Tell us how flexible your dates are.

  1. We confirm the product the joint needs before talking about colour.
  2. We compare your RAL reference or sample with the colours made for that sealant.
  3. A short trial length can be approved before the full run on visible work.
  4. We remove the existing bead, clean the faces and set the depth.
  5. The coloured sealant is applied and tooled with clean, masked edges.

Getting the site ready

  • For older buildings, check the asbestos register before work
  • Clear stock, furniture or equipment away from the joints
  • Confirm the product named in the specification

Sealant on show in Wick’s commercial buildings

With the shore within about 1 mile, Wick counts as a coastal location. Exposed frontages near the sea are hard on sealant, so the product has to suit the weather as well as the look. Sea-facing elevations are usually where failed joints show first. There are a number of hotels within about 2 miles of Wick. Hotel refurbishments are where a matched sealant colour earns its place: bathroom, bar and reception joints have to sit with the finishes; work is planned so the hotel keeps trading.

Refits at hotels like Mackays Hotel, less than half a mile west of Wick, bring joints at vanity tops, bars and reception desks that guests see every day. Offices and shops close to stations such as Wick station, less than half a mile to the west of Wick, tend to be busy all day, so sealant work is planned around opening hours.

Wick is in Highland. We send applicators to Wick for colour-matched joints, handled exactly as we handle every other area. Wick is one of 256 places in Highland on our list.

We cover the KW1 postcode districts. Among the streets we cover are Market Street, Argyle Square and High Street, and sites on any of them can send details for a fixed quote. Main routes into Wick include the A99 and A882, which helps when planning parking and deliveries for the job. Sites close to Wick are covered too, including Whiterow (1 mile south), Staxigoe (1 mile north-east), Ackergillshore (2 miles north), Haster (3 miles west) and Reiss (3 miles north-west). Among the larger centres in Highland is Wick, and its commercial and public buildings are all within our area. Where a site is remote or on an island, we plan travel and materials carefully.

How the job changes by surface

Paintable sealants

Paintable sealants suit internal, low-movement joints best. We’ll tell you if a joint needs a non-paintable product.

Cladding panels

Multi-coloured cladding needs a joint colour that works across it. A neutral tone from the range often works best and we can trial it first.

Wick: questions and answers

Will you take on work at estates like Wick Retail Park, close to Wick?

Yes. We cover Wick and the area around it, including industrial estates, business parks and retail parks such as Wick Retail Park. Send details of the unit and the work through our quote form for a quick quote.

Does a coastal location like Wick affect which sealant is used?

It can, yes: buildings near the sea take more wind-driven rain, and salt in the air nearer the shore. We choose the product for the exposure, prime where the manufacturer requires it and size the joint for its movement.

Does the weather affect the work?

Outside, yes. The joint has to be dry and within the product’s temperature range, so damp, frosty or very cold days can stop external work. Inside work is seldom held up.

How long does a job like this take?

That varies with the scale of the job, but the work usually takes a day for a modest shop fit, and longer for a full building or several floors. For bigger or phased jobs, we’ll set out a timescale with the quote.

What will the job cost?

Each job is quoted on its own details. For yours, give us a call on 01277 525 020 or use the quote form.

Do you work to architects’ specifications?

Yes. Send it with your enquiry, and the quote will be based on it, flagging anything that needs clarifying.

Are you CHAS accredited?

Yes. Mastic Doctor is CHAS accredited and a Constructionline member.

Doing it in-house

General builders and handymen seal joints, but it isn’t their main trade. A specialist prepares properly, controls joint depth and picks a product with the right movement class.

Redoing a failed joint normally costs more than getting it right at the outset, since all of it has to come out and the faces be cleaned back again. That’s why many clients bring in a specialist from the beginning.

Maintenance after handover

Problems stay small when the joints are checked regularly. Specifically:

  • Keep the colour details for future repairs
  • Put the colour reference on the finishes schedule
  • Insist on the agreed colour for any repair
  • Avoid piecemeal repairs on coloured joints

Give the sealant its full cure time before cleaning or handling the area. Fresh coloured beads show fingerprints and dust more easily.

Standardise the sealant colour on multi-site work. Consistency makes future work simpler for whoever reseals next.

Common problems we fix in Wick

Colour-matched sealant is typically requested because a standard bead has spoiled the finish: a pale bead on a dark frame, or an old seal that has discoloured. Replacing it with a suitable colour restores the intended look.

These are often picked up first by site or facilities staff:

  • Shop fits that need consistent sealant colours across sites
  • Failed coloured sealant that has split or peeled
  • Patch repairs in several different colours
  • Standard-colour sealant spoiling a high-end finish

Sites a few miles apart, such as Wick Retail Park and Lochshell Business Park, can share one programme and one point of contact.

What to look for in a quote

  • Which product they’ll use, and why it suits the joint
  • How they’ll work around occupants
  • Whether old or failed sealant will be cut out, not overlaid
  • How joint depth will be controlled
