Fire stopping across Ruisgarry

Photos, a specification or a quick description of the joints is enough to start a fixed quote.

What sealant work can’t fix

Part of a good diagnosis is knowing where sealant stops. We will tell you if the real problem is any of the following:

  • Writing the fire-stopping specification
  • Approving the work on behalf of building control
  • Openings that need collars, wraps, batts or boards rather than sealant

Not sure which it is? You can give us a call on 01277 525 020 or use the quote form and we’ll tell you honestly.

What we seal

  • Pipe penetrations
  • Service gaps in risers
  • Joints between fire-resisting walls and floors
  • Cable penetrations
  • Small duct penetrations where the tested detail allows
  • Linear gaps at wall heads

About our fire stopping in Ruisgarry

Penetration seals are fire tested to BS EN 1366-3 and linear joint seals to BS EN 1366-4. That classification, such as EI 60 or EI 120, belongs to the product in its tested arrangement. So our job is to reproduce that arrangement faithfully. If you are dealing with unsealed penetrations discovered above suspended ceilings and head-of-wall gaps with no fire seal, we can put it right, whatever the surface. Searching for sealant specialists in Ruisgarry? Mastic Doctor has worked for contractors, FMs and building owners since 2005, with CSCS-carded applicators.

Travel to smaller places like Ruisgarry is planned so every penetration is sealed on one trip. Photos of the gaps, the services and the wall or floor type help us bring the right products.

The 12-month guarantee is for workmanship rather than wear and tear. Sealant wears with time, and movement, weather, cleaning and use decide how fast, so we spell out the cover before we begin.

Our process

We bring the products specified for the job, along with primers and backing rod. Joint faces are cleaned back to sound, dry surfaces, primer goes on where the manufacturer specifies it, and each bead is tooled to a neat concave finish. For a building near Ruisgarry, directions, keys and a contact on the day are worth sorting early. That goes into the plan alongside the quote.

  1. First we go through the drawings, schedule or specification for the seals.
  2. On site, each opening is checked against the tested detail it is meant to follow.
  3. Anything that doesn’t belong in the opening, such as expanding foam or general-purpose filler, is removed.
  4. Mineral wool or other backing goes in wherever the detail asks.
  5. We apply the specified sealant to the depth and around the services as the detail shows.
  6. If an opening needs something other than sealant, we tell you instead of improvising.

Looking after the joints

Sealant joints are maintenance items, and their life depends on movement, exposure, cleaning and use. Our advice:

  • Get seals inspected before ceilings and boxing close
  • Record which product was used where
  • Leave fire sealant to cure fully before covering it
  • Include service cupboards in routine inspections

Keep the product data and installation details with the building’s fire safety information. Anyone resealing later needs to know which product and detail were used.

The simplest way to keep compartment walls intact is to plan fire stopping into every job that crosses them. That way the opening is sealed while the trade and access are still there.

Fire-rated sealing for Ruisgarry buildings

Being on an island, Ruisgarry means planning around ferry times as well as the weather. We need the specification and a count of penetrations before we sail. Scotland has its own building standards: the non-domestic Technical Handbook (clause 2.1.14) says service penetrations should be fire stopped to at least the fire resistance duration of the wall or floor, and products should be tested for their end use. We install fire-rated sealant to that tested detail where it is specified.

For buildings in and around Ruisgarry, fire-rated sealant is installed where it is specified, to the manufacturer’s tested detail. For any site around Ruisgarry, we work to the specification and the manufacturer’s installation guidance, leaving design and sign-off with the designer.

Ruisgarry (Gaelic: Ruisigearraidh) is in Na h-Eileanan Siar. We cover commercial sites throughout Ruisgarry, whether it’s a single job or part of a planned programme. 87 places across Na h-Eileanan Siar fall within our area, Ruisgarry among them.

Work on service penetrations is covered throughout HS6, whatever the building. We also cover Clachan Shannda (4 miles south-west), Leverburgh (6 miles north-east), An t-Ob (7 miles north-east), Lochmaddy (8 miles south) and Locheport (12 miles south) for service penetrations. Island and remote sites need extra planning, with travel, ferry crossings where needed and weather to allow for, so give the site location in your enquiry.

When to bring in a specialist

What you see is the finished bead, but most of the work is hidden. Backing rod, primer where specified and a joint designed to move with the building are where general trades tend to cut corners.

Certain joints really need a specialist: fire-rated seals that must follow a tested detail, trafficked floor joints and external movement joints among them. A poor seal in places like these tends to cost more to put right later.

Building owners, agents and FMs in Ruisgarry

CHAS accredited and a Constructionline member, we make supplier vetting simple. Our insurance certificate can be sent along with the quote.

Hotels, schools, healthcare sites, offices and retail units come to us directly as well. The work is planned around how the building runs, so the building keeps working while we do.

Ruisgarry: questions and answers

Do you design the fire stopping for buildings in Ruisgarry?

No. The designer or fire engineer sets the detail and building control accepts it. Our part is installing the specified product to its tested detail, and telling you if the detail calls for something other than sealant.

Can you take on a job in Ruisgarry, on the island?

Yes. Every Scottish council area is within our area, and that includes island locations such as Ruisgarry. Ferry times and the weather set the plan, so we ask for photos and a full list first.

Is the work guaranteed?

Yes, for 12 months. If our installation fails in that time, we return and fix it.

Are you fully insured?

Yes. Mastic Doctor is fully insured, public liability included.

Can staff carry on working while you’re here?

Yes, with some planning. We agree a sequence with your contact so just one area at a time is disrupted.

Can you quote from photographs?

Many jobs can be quoted from photographs, drawings or a joint schedule. If the job needs a look first, we will arrange a visit before quoting.

Can you send site paperwork?

Requirements differ from site to site, so tell us what you need and we will confirm it when we quote.

Different surfaces, different methods

Risers and ceiling voids

Service risers and the voids above ceilings are where openings collect. Access to these areas is planned with you in advance.

Cables and cable bundles

Single cables and small bundles are often within a fire-rated sealant’s tested detail. The detail limits bundle size and the gaps between and around cables, so we check before sealing.
