About our fire stopping in Fogwatt
Sealant is the specified answer for plenty of openings, such as metal pipes, cables and some small ducts where the detail covers them. Larger openings and some plastic pipes call for collars, wraps, batts or boards instead. If the detail calls for something other than sealant, we say so rather than force sealant into it. The enquiries we see most involve fire stopping installed outside its tested range and penetration schedules that need working through, across service gaps in risers, joints between fire-resisting walls and floors and cable penetrations. Looking for mastic applicators who cover Fogwatt? We’ve been sealing commercial buildings since 2005, with CSCS-carded applicators.
Around smaller places such as Fogwatt, compartment walls and floors tend to be in schools, hotels, care homes and community buildings. Those penetrations are closed with the product the specification names, built up as tested.
A 12-month guarantee applies to all our work in Moray. If an installation problem shows up, phone 01277 525 020 or email the details over and we will arrange a return visit.

Why deal with it now?
Inspections and handover checks often pick up fire stopping. Late discoveries can delay handover while openings are reopened and resealed which is why earlier is better. Buildings that aren’t in daily use, such as halls and seasonal premises, may let water in unnoticed, so a failed joint has time to cause damage. Early resealing prevents it.
No two sites price the same: joint size, product, access and site hours all play a part. A fixed quote follows once we understand the job.

When something else is needed
We seal joints; we don’t mend everything behind them. Sealant alone won’t deal with:
- Gaps in walls that were never built as compartment walls
- Plastic pipes whose detail calls for a collar or wrap
- Approving the work on behalf of building control
Not sure which it is? You can speak to us on 01277 525 020 or email the details over and we will tell you honestly before you book.

Building owners, agents and FMs in Fogwatt
We work for building owners and managing agents on sealant work across single buildings or whole portfolios. Several sites can go on one quote, so there’s one set of paperwork to deal with.
Hospitality, education, healthcare, office and retail clients come to us directly as well. We plan around the way the building is used, so the building keeps working while we do.
How the quote is worked out
Quotes vary with the job. Expect it to depend on:
- Location, for remote and island sites
- Whether the work must be split into stages
- The total length or number of joints
- The product specified
Quantities, awkward access and phased working all shape the price. So do site requirements such as inductions and permits.
Sending details for a quote
There’s no need for a formal survey. A few details are enough to get going:
- The product your specification calls for
- The asbestos register, for older buildings
- Drawings or a marked-up plan, if available
- What the building is and how it’s used
Every job follows the same four steps: send details, get a quote, we seal, guaranteed. To take the first step, phone 01277 525 020 or send details through our quote form.
Do you need fire stopping in Fogwatt?
Physical damage is another reason seals stop doing their job. Maintenance work can knock a seal, cut it back for an extra cable or remove it with an old pipe and the opening isn’t always resealed.
These are often picked up first by site or facilities staff:
- Expanding foam used as fire stopping
- Fire-rated sealant that has cracked or shrunk back
- Snag lists that include open service penetrations
- Hidden openings found during inspections
On a hospital site such as Dr Gray's Hospital, 3.8 miles to the north-west of Fogwatt, fire-rated sealant goes in where the specification calls for it, with the work planned around the estates team’s permits.
What to look for in a quote
- Whether primer will be used where the manufacturer specifies it
- How long is the guarantee, and what does it include?
- Their public liability cover
- Will failed sealant be removed rather than covered?
Where services cross fire walls in Fogwatt
Under the Scottish non-domestic Technical Handbook, clause 2.1.14, penetrations should be fire stopped to at least the wall or floor’s fire resistance duration, and products should be tested for their end use. We install what’s specified, to the product’s tested detail.
Where a unit on an estate such as Troves Industrial Estate (2 miles north of Fogwatt), has fire-resisting walls between offices and warehouse, any new service through them should be sealed to the tested detail.

From enquiry to sign-off
Before any cutting starts, the area is protected: masking tape along the joint edges and sheeting over anything nearby. On site, the work normally takes a single visit for a short list of penetrations, or a phased programme for a whole building, and our waste is bagged and taken away as we go. For a building near Fogwatt, directions, keys and a contact on the day are worth sorting early. That goes into the plan alongside the quote.
- The specification and schedule come first, so we know which details apply.
- We plan the sequence of floors, risers and voids with you.
- Each opening is checked for wall or floor type, service, gap and depth.
- Foam, ordinary sealant and debris come out so the seal starts clean.
- The specified backing and sealant go in to depth and are finished neatly.
- Anything outside the detail is reported to you rather than sealed.
Preparing the site
- Clear stock, furniture or equipment away from the joints
- Confirm the product named in the specification
- Tell us which areas need to stay in use

Advice
FAQs: Fogwatt
Is a smaller place like Fogwatt outside your area?
Not at all. Fogwatt is within our area. Every Scottish council area is within our area. Send photos and a list of what needs doing, and we’ll plan the job to need as few trips as possible.
Is hospital work, at somewhere like Dr Gray's Hospital, something you do?
Yes. We work in healthcare settings as well as offices and schools. Each area is agreed with the ward or department and the estates team in advance.
Can you follow the specification on our project?
Yes. Send it with your enquiry, and we’ll price the work to it.
Is the BS 476 change in 2029 relevant to fire stopping?
For buildings in England, Approved Document B removes BS 476 references from 2 September 2029. Products are then judged on BS EN 13501-2 classifications, though transitional rules apply. Scotland follows its own Technical Handbook, with clause 2.1.14 covering service penetrations.
Do you take on small jobs?
Small jobs are welcome alongside larger packages. Send details for a fixed quote.
What do BS EN 1366-3 and BS EN 13501-2 mean?
BS EN 1366-3 covers penetration seals and BS EN 1366-4 covers linear joints. Classification follows BS EN 13501-2 as E for integrity and I for insulation, with a time such as EI 60 or EI 120. That rating only holds when the product is installed to its tested detail.
Are you insured?
Yes. Mastic Doctor is fully insured, public liability included.
