Fire stopping for businesses in Fern

Photos, a specification or a quick description of the joints is enough to start a fixed quote.

Fire stopping in Fern, done properly

For main contractors, our fire stopping package slots in after the M&E trades have finished in an area. To price a package, ring 01277 525 020 or use the quote form with the schedule or marked-up drawings. Tell us what records you need and we will confirm with the quote. We work on linear gaps at wall heads, pipe penetrations and cable penetrations, and what we are called in for most is damaged fire seals in risers and voids and penetration schedules that need working through. Sealant applicators who only do sealant are a different proposition from a general trade with a gun in the van: on jobs in Fern, preparation and product choice get the time they need.

Around smaller places like Fern, penetration seals come up in schools, halls, pubs with rooms, care homes and farm buildings used as offices. Any service penetration through those walls should be closed with the specified product, set out as its test evidence shows.

The 12-month guarantee covers our workmanship: preparation, application and finish. Damage, later alterations by others and movement beyond what the joint was designed for sit outside it.

Work for main contractors and building owners

We work for building owners and managing agents on sealant work across single buildings or whole portfolios. One quote can cover more than one site, which keeps the paperwork simple.

If you look after buildings for someone else, you need clear quotes and clear reporting. You get a fixed quote, an agreed scope and a walk round at the end, plus a 12-month guarantee.

Fern: questions and answers

Is Fern too small for you to travel to?

No. Small places get the same service as large ones. Our area covers London and the South East counties. Send photos and a list of what needs doing, and we will plan the job to need as few trips as possible.

Can you work on a hospital site such as Marlow Community Hospital?

Yes, healthcare and care buildings are part of our work. Each area is agreed with the ward or department and the estates team in advance.

What changes on 2 September 2029?

From 2 September 2029, Approved Document B in England drops its references to BS 476 classes, with transitional arrangements set by the Government. After that, the European classification under BS EN 13501-2 is the route. Your designer will choose products with the right evidence.

Do you need to see the site first?

Many jobs can be quoted from photos, drawings or a joint schedule. If the job needs a look first, we’ll arrange a visit.

What if there’s asbestos in the old mastic?

Asbestos is possible in some older mastics, particularly in buildings from before 2000. We check the asbestos register before cutting out old sealant in an older building, and work stops until any suspect material has been tested. We don’t remove asbestos-containing materials.

Will you write the fire-stopping specification?

No. Deciding what is needed sits with the designer, fire engineer and building control. Our role is fitting the specified fire-rated sealant, following the maker’s tested details.

Can you follow the specification on our project?

Yes. The specification and the manufacturer’s installation guidance are what we work to, and any queries are raised before we start.

Maintenance after handover

Once the work is signed off, these steps help:

  • Keep product data and details in the fire safety file
  • Get seals inspected before ceilings and boxing close
  • Report damaged or disturbed seals as soon as they’re spotted
  • Ask which product is in place before decorating

After every round of M&E works, check that the openings created have been sealed. Building it into each contractor’s sign-off keeps the walls intact.

Make reporting new openings part of every permit to work in service areas. It costs little and catches breaches early.

Compartment walls and floors in Fern

Fern is about 28 miles from central London. Business park offices in the commuter belt are refitted as tenants change, and each fit-out adds services through compartment walls. In England, Approved Document B covers fire stopping of openings and penetrations. From 2 September 2029, BS 476 references are being taken out of Approved Document B, leaving BS EN 13501-2 classification as the route, subject to the Government’s transitional arrangements. Either way, we install the specified product to its tested detail.

Where a unit on an estate such as Soho Mills Industrial Estate, 1.7 miles east of Fern, has fire-resisting walls between offices and warehouse, any new service through them should be sealed to the tested detail. Residences at universities like Buckinghamshire New University (2.9 miles north of Fern) have compartment walls that must be resealed whenever services change.

Fern is about 2 miles north-east of Marlow, in Buckinghamshire. Anywhere in SL7, it works the same way: details in, fixed quote out, then sealing and a 12-month guarantee. Fern is one of 308 places in Buckinghamshire on our list for service penetrations. There’s a separate page for Reading, roughly 14 miles from Fern.

Work on service penetrations is covered throughout SL7, for business premises of every kind. Sites close to Fern are covered too, including Coldmoorholme (1 mile south-east), Little Marlow (1 mile south-west), Well End (1 mile south-east), Bourne End (1 mile south-east) and Flackwell Heath (1 mile north-east). Nearby towns on our patch include High Wycombe (3 miles north), Chesham (10 miles north-east), Amersham (8 miles north-east), Beaconsfield (4 miles east), Chalfont St Peter (8 miles east) and Southcourt (15 miles north).

Landmarks near Fern

A little further out are High Wycombe Castle (3.1 miles north) and Chiltern Sound Phonograph Museum (2.3 miles south-west). For a walk, there’s Warren Nature Reserve.

What affects the price in Fern

Before we quote, we look at:

  • Induction, permit and paperwork requirements
  • How much existing material needs removing
  • The size and state of each joint
  • Phasing around occupants

Whether it’s a single area or a whole estate, the same things set the price: what’s in scope, how we reach it, what’s specified and when it needs doing. Call for a quote, and you’ll have a fixed figure to work with.

What to include in your enquiry

However big the job, these details speed things up:

  • Your programme or deadline
  • Access details, including height
  • The asbestos register, for older buildings
  • The product your specification calls for

Send us photographs, drawings or a joint schedule are often enough for a fixed quote. Where a site visit makes more sense, we will arrange one.

From enquiry to sign-off

We begin with a short walk round with whoever looks after the building, agreeing which joints are in scope, where to start and what must stay open. After that, any old or failed material is removed, each joint is prepared and the new sealant goes in. For a building around Fern, tell us how to find it and who will meet us. Send that with the details and we will confirm the plan with the quote.

  1. We read the specification, drawings or penetration schedule you send and ask about anything unclear.
  2. On site, each opening is checked against the tested detail it is meant to follow.
  3. Anything that doesn’t belong in the opening, such as expanding foam or general-purpose filler, is removed.
  4. Mineral wool or other backing goes in wherever the detail asks.
  5. Fire-rated or intumescent sealant is gunned in to the specified depth, then tooled.
  6. If an opening needs something other than sealant, we tell you instead of improvising.

Before we start on site

  • Let building users know which areas are affected
  • Clear stock, furniture or equipment away from the joints
  • Confirm the product named in the specification

Should maintenance staff do it?

Redoing a failed joint typically costs more than getting it right at the outset, since all of it has to come out and the faces be cleaned back again. For that reason, many FMs and contractors use a sealant specialist from the outset.

For a quick touch-up, site staff may be fine, but larger jobs are different: a specialist works through quantities efficiently, leaves a consistent finish and backs it with a 12-month guarantee.

When to call us in Fern

Linear gaps fail where a fire-resisting wall meets a slab, soffit or another wall. Movement in the frame or slab can open the joint, and a product not tested for that movement may crack. The tested detail for a linear joint states the width and movement it covers.

Typical triggers for a call:

  • Snag lists that include open service penetrations
  • Improvised or mixed-product fire seals
  • Old intumescent sealant that has split away
  • Builders’ foam or ordinary silicone in compartment walls

Hospital estates such as Marlow Community Hospital, 2 miles south-west of Fern, are divided into fire compartments, and any service penetration through them should be sealed to the specified, tested detail.
