Fire stopping for Church End sites

Photos, a specification or a quick description of the joints is enough to start a fixed quote.

How we handle fire stopping in Church End

Penetration seals are fire tested to BS EN 1366-3 and linear joint seals to BS EN 1366-4, with results classified under BS EN 13501-2. A rating such as EI 60 only holds when the product is installed as it was tested. Reproducing the tested arrangement on site is the part we take care of. We work on cable penetrations, small duct penetrations where the tested detail allows and service gaps in risers, and the failures we’re asked to look at most are fire stopping installed outside its tested range and damaged fire seals in risers and voids. A single leaking joint is often how a building in Church End first comes to us: we check the joints around it and give you an honest view of what needs doing now and what can wait.

Barn and farm-building conversions near places like Church End often combine new partitions with old walls. Where a pipe or cable passes through a fire-resisting wall, the seal must match the tested detail: product, substrate, gap and depth.

Guaranteed is the last step of every job. Our workmanship is backed for 12 months, and the quote explains what it covers.

Your questions answered

Is Church End too far out for you?

Not at all: smaller places are covered as well as towns. We cover Greater London and the counties of the South East. We plan jobs in smaller places so return trips are kept to a minimum.

Can you work on a hospital site such as Basingstoke and North Hampshire Hospital?

Yes, provided the work is planned with the site’s estates team. Work is phased so departments keep running, under the site’s own rules.

Who decides which product is used?

A specification, where there is one, decides it. If there isn’t one, it comes down to the joint: how much it moves, what it bonds to and whether it’s wet, trafficked or fire-rated.

Can you handle several sites?

Yes. We take on portfolio and planned maintenance work, with each site phased to suit its occupants.

Do you seal openings left by new services?

Yes. Share the penetration schedule and product details and a fixed quote follows. We can follow the services contractor floor by floor.

Are you members of a third-party fire-stopping installer scheme?

No. We don’t hold a third-party fire-stopping installer certificate. We are CHAS accredited and a Constructionline member, and our applicators are CSCS-carded. Where a client or main contractor requires a scheme member, we’ll say so right away rather than waste your time.

What do BS EN 1366-3 and BS EN 13501-2 mean?

The tests are BS EN 1366-3 for penetrations and BS EN 1366-4 for linear joints, and classification is to BS EN 13501-2. EI 60 means integrity and insulation for 60 minutes in the tested arrangement and the installation has to match the test.

What affects the price in Church End

Each job is priced on its own details. The things that drive the figure:

  • Distance, for remote addresses
  • Working within restricted access windows
  • Quantities, in metres or numbers
  • The site’s rules and procedures

The price depends on how many linear metres there are, what has to come out first and how the joints are reached. Call for a fixed quote once you have the details.

Details that help us quote

We can often quote from photographs and a few details. Please tell us:

  • Approximate linear metres or a joint schedule
  • Your programme or deadline
  • What the building is and how it’s used
  • A wide shot and a close-up of the area

If there’s a specification, drawings or a tender package, send it with your enquiry, and we will price the work to it. For smaller jobs, photos and a description will do.

What the job involves on each surface

Linear joints

Linear joints run along the head of a wall, at a slab edge or between two fire-resisting elements. BS EN 1366-4 testing sets the joint widths, depths, backing and movement a seal covers and the installation has to fit inside those limits.

Masonry and concrete

Block walls and concrete floors are common substrates for penetration seals. Dust and loose debris are cleared out of the opening, so the sealant and any backing sit properly.

Fire-rated sealing for Church End buildings

Central London is about 43 miles from Church End. Office refits around the commuter belt bring new cabling through fire-resisting walls; the gaps need the specified seal. Fire stopping of openings and penetrations in England falls under Approved Document B. References to the older BS 476 classes are being removed from it from 2 September 2029, after which the European classification, BS EN 13501-2, is the route, subject to transitional arrangements. What we install is set by the specification, and it goes in to the tested detail.

Large healthcare estates like Basingstoke and North Hampshire Hospital, 3.8 miles south-west of Church End, change their services often, so penetration seals are worth checking after M&E work. For a school such as The Loddon School, penetration sealing fits best at the end of the summer works. For a building such as Church of St. Leonard, new heating or data runs are the usual reason penetrations need sealing.

Church End is about 4 miles north-east of Basingstoke, in Hampshire. Anywhere in RG27, the process is the same: details in, fixed quote out, then sealing and a 12-month guarantee. We work across 723 places in Hampshire, large and small. Reading is covered too, some 10 miles away.

On site: what to expect

In a busy building, we agree a sequence with your contact so the disruption stays in one area at once. Each area is protected, prepared and sealed, then handed back before the next one starts. Smaller jobs around Church End can be grouped with others nearby, which keeps travel down. You will have a fixed quote before work starts.

  1. We read the specification, drawings or penetration schedule you send.
  2. Every penetration is compared with its detail: wall or floor type, service, gap size and depth.
  3. Anything that doesn’t belong in the opening, such as expanding foam or general-purpose filler, is removed.
  4. We fit the backing the detail asks for, to the stated depth.
  5. Fire-rated or intumescent sealant is gunned in to the specified depth, then tooled.
  6. If an opening needs something other than sealant, we tell you instead of improvising.

What sealant work can’t fix

We seal joints; we don’t mend everything behind them. On its own, sealant can’t deal with:

  • Fire doors, dampers or other fire safety equipment
  • Designing or specifying fire stopping, which sits with the designer or fire engineer
  • Gaps in walls that were never built as compartment walls

Not sure which it is? You can ring 01277 525 020 or email the details over and we will tell you honestly before you book.

What we seal

  • Joints between fire-resisting walls and floors
  • Linear gaps at wall heads
  • Service gaps in risers
  • Pipe penetrations
  • Cable penetrations
  • Small duct penetrations where the tested detail allows

Looking after the joints

Every sealant joint needs some looking after, and their life depends on movement, exposure, cleaning and use. We suggest:

  • Include service cupboards in routine inspections
  • Foam or ordinary sealant is never a fire-seal repair
  • Ask which product is in place before decorating
  • Get seals inspected before ceilings and boxing close

Allow the manufacturer’s stated cure time before boxing in or decorating. Not every fire-rated product can be painted.

Ask every contractor who works in risers or voids to report openings they create. It costs little and catches breaches early.
