Fire stopping in Asheridge
Our applicators are CSCS-carded, and we are CHAS accredited and a Constructionline member. We hold no third-party fire-stopping installer certificate, and we won’t pretend otherwise. We install the specified fire-rated sealant to its tested detail, and our workmanship carries a 12-month guarantee. If you’re dealing with unsealed openings around new pipes and cables and old intumescent sealant that has split away, we can put it right. Sealant applicators who only do sealant are a different proposition from a general trade with a gun in the van: in Asheridge, that means joint design, primers and backing rod as standard.
Barn and farm-building conversions near places like Asheridge often combine new partitions with old walls. A penetration seal only performs as tested if product, substrate, service, gap and depth all match the detail.
The 12-month guarantee covers our workmanship: preparation, application and finish. Damage, later alterations by others and movement beyond what the joint was designed for sit outside it.

Your questions answered
Is Asheridge too small for you to travel to?
Not at all: smaller places are covered as well as towns. We cover Greater London and the counties of the South East. Good photographs up front let us bring everything on the first visit.
What does the BS 476 change mean for fire-rated sealant in Asheridge?
From 2 September 2029, Approved Document B drops its BS 476 references in favour of BS EN 13501-2 classification, with transitional arrangements. Whichever applies, we install the specified product to its tested detail; the specification is for the designer to set.
Does weather matter for sealant work?
Outside, yes. The joint has to be dry and within the product’s temperature range, so frost, rain or cold mornings can delay outside work. Inside work is seldom held up.
How do you choose the sealant?
The specification comes first, if there is one. If there isn’t one, it comes down to the joint: how much it moves, what it bonds to and whether it’s wet, trafficked or fire-rated.
How much does the work cost?
We don’t publish prices, because every site is different. Send photos or drawings and we will price it at a fixed figure.
Do you have public liability insurance?
Yes. We’re fully insured, including public liability cover.
Do you take on multi-site work?
Yes. We take on portfolio and planned maintenance work, planned site by site to suit how each building is used.
Penetration seals near Asheridge
Central London is about 28 miles from Asheridge. Tenant changes on commuter-belt business parks mean regular fit-outs, and new services through compartment walls, and the gaps need sealing with the specified product. Approved Document B is the English guidance that covers fire stopping around openings and penetrations. The national BS 476 classes are due to drop out of it from 2 September 2029, leaving the European BS EN 13501-2 route, subject to transitional arrangements. Our part stays the same: the specified product, installed to its tested detail.
For a building at a site such as Waterside Business Park, 2.5 miles to the south-east of Asheridge, a check of penetration seals after each fit-out is good practice. For a building such as St John's Church, new heating or data runs are the usual reason penetrations need sealing.
Asheridge is about 2 miles north-west of Chesham, in Buckinghamshire. Asheridge sits inside our coverage, with the same fixed quotes and 12-month guarantee as everywhere else. Asheridge is one of 308 places we cover in Buckinghamshire. Sites around Reading have their own page, roughly 24 miles from Asheridge.
If you need fire stopping in HP5, the process matches everywhere else we work: details, then a fixed price, then sealing and a 12-month guarantee. If your site is on Widmore Close and Braziers End or close by, we can quote for service penetrations. We also cover Chartridge (1 mile south-west), Bellingdon (1 mile north), Hawridge (1 mile north), Pond Park (1 mile south-east) and Heath End (2 miles north-east) for service penetrations. Further afield, our area takes in Aylesbury (10 miles north-west), High Wycombe (9 miles south-west), Marlow (12 miles south-west), Amersham (4 miles south-east), Beaconsfield (9 miles south) and Chalfont St Peter (9 miles south).
Around Asheridge
We work on buildings around Chiltern Hills Academy and The Blue Ball pub, among other places. The closest station to Asheridge is Great Missenden station, about 3.6 miles south-west of the centre. Nearby you will also find Hawridge Court (1 mile north-east) and Chiltern Hospital (3.7 miles south-west). Not far away are Sands Bank and Pavis Wood.
When to call us in Asheridge
Damage plays a part too. Seals get knocked during maintenance, cut back to add a cable or pulled out when services are swapped.
If one of these sounds familiar, it’s time for a closer look:
- Damaged fire seals in risers and voids
- Old intumescent sealant that has split away
- Hidden openings found during inspections
- Openings left by services added after handover
In a school such as Chartridge Combined School, fire-rated sealant goes in around service penetrations where it is specified.
Questions to ask before you book
- Do they follow the manufacturer’s priming guidance?
- Are they CHAS accredited or on Constructionline?
- Is the sealant right for the movement and the substrate?
- Is depth set with backing rod, or bond-breaker tape in shallow joints?
Different surfaces, different methods
Drylining partitions
Holes in board are often cut larger than needed. If the gap exceeds the tested range, sealant alone won’t do and we will tell you what the detail says instead.
Small ducts
Ducts are only sealed with sealant where the detail allows it. Dampers and ductwork systems themselves are outside our work.
Looking after the joints
Regular inspection catches problems early. In particular:
- Ask which product is in place before decorating
- Agree the fire-stopping specification before services go in
- File the specified details where the next contractor can find them
- Don’t let anyone top up a fire seal with the wrong product
Once the seals are in, tell other trades they exist and must not be disturbed. If a seal has to be opened for a new service, it should be reinstated to the same detail, by someone who knows the system.
Make reporting new openings part of every permit to work in service areas. It costs little and catches breaches early.
On site: what to expect
A typical day starts with protection: masking tape along the joint edges and sheeting over anything nearby. On site, the work usually takes a single visit for a short list of penetrations, or a phased programme for a whole building, and our waste is bagged and taken away as we go. Jobs in and around smaller places like Asheridge are typically planned as a single visit, so we ask for photographs and rough sizes first. Then the right materials arrive with us.
- We ask for the product and detail your designer has specified.
- Openings are measured and grouped by detail.
- Old or wrong materials are cut out.
- Mineral wool or other backing is fitted where required.
- We gun the sealant in to the specified depth around each service and tool it.
- Completed areas are checked with you, with the records agreed when we quoted.
Before we start on site
- Send asbestos survey details if the building is pre-2000
- Let us know about inductions and permits
- Arrange parking or a loading space
Request a quote
Specifications, drawings and tender packages are welcome with any enquiry, and we will price against exactly what is specified. For smaller jobs, photographs and a description will do.
Related advice
What sealant work can’t fix
Our job is the joint, not everything around it. On its own, sealant can’t deal with:
- Writing the fire-stopping specification
- Openings that need collars, wraps, batts or boards rather than sealant
- Issuing fire ratings or certificates for seals
Not sure which it is? You can call the office on 01277 525 020 or send details through our quote form and we will tell you honestly before you book.
What we seal
- Linear gaps at wall heads
- Joints between fire-resisting walls and floors
- Service gaps in risers
- Cable penetrations
- Small duct penetrations where the tested detail allows
- Pipe penetrations

What else we do in Asheridge
What happens if it’s left?
It is cheaper to seal service penetrations as each services package finishes than to come back for them later. Openings are visible, access is open and nothing has to be taken down. One visit to deal with every failing joint makes more sense than several trips to a place like Asheridge, rather than one at a time. Send photos of each area and we will quote for the lot.
The specified product makes a difference, as does the preparation each joint needs. Access, phasing and site rules also count.
