Warehouse floors and decks around Quarter

Quarter has at least three named business or industrial parks inside a 3-mile radius. Sites like these are full of saw-cut floor joints, yard slabs and car park joints. The west of Scotland, where Quarter is, gets more rain than the east. Rainwater through open yard and deck joints is a bigger issue here than in the drier east. External sealing is booked for dry spells, with some give in the dates.

In a school such as Larkhall Academy, movement joints in brick, block and hall floors tend to be forgotten until they leak. Business parks such as Barncluith Business Centre, 2.3 miles north of Quarter, have car parks, paved areas and long brick and panel elevations, all with movement joints. Sites like Udston Hospital, 3.3 miles north-west of Quarter, carry ambulances, deliveries and visitors’ cars over their road and deck joints.

Quarter is about 2 miles west of Larkhall, in South Lanarkshire. Commercial clients in Quarter can call on us for movement joints. Quarter is one of 134 places in South Lanarkshire on our list for movement joints. For work in that direction, see our Glasgow page, about 12 miles away.

We cover the ML3 postcode districts for movement joints. For a building on Larch Way, Baltersan Gardens and Rowan Grove or nearby, we can quote for movement joints. If your building is just outside Quarter, we cover Earnock (1 mile north), Avongrove (1 mile north-west), Meikle Earnock (1 mile north-west), Barncluith (2 miles north) and Allanton (2 miles north-east). A short drive away, we cover East Kilbride (6 miles west), Cambuslang (7 miles north-west), Uddingston (6 miles north), Blantyre (4 miles north-west), Carluke (8 miles east) and Rutherglen (9 miles north-west).

Landmarks near Quarter

The nearest railway station is Chatelherault station, roughly 2 miles north-east of the centre. Nearby you will also find Cadzow Castle (1.5 miles north) and Udston Hospital (3.3 miles north-west). For a walk, there’s Strathclyde Loch and Baron's Haugh RSPB Reserve.

Expansion joint sealing in Quarter

Buildings and slabs are never completely still: temperature, moisture, shrinkage and loading all make materials grow and shrink. Movement joints are where that movement is absorbed and the seal across each one keeps out water and grit. Mastic Doctor reseals movement joints in brickwork, blockwork, concrete, cladding and floors. Site teams most often ask us about torn sealant in brick or block movement joints and chipped joint edges on forklift routes, on blockwork control joints, brickwork movement joints and car park decks and ramps. Looking for mastic applicators who cover Quarter? We have been sealing commercial buildings since 2005, with CSCS-carded applicators.

Around smaller Scottish places like Quarter, slabs needing attention are often in agricultural buildings, workshops, schools and hotels. Concrete slabs and yards there take vehicles and weather.

We sign every job off with a 12-month guarantee. The promise is simple: if our work fails within that year, we put it right.

Quarter: questions and answers

Is a hospital such as Udston Hospital somewhere you can work?

Yes, healthcare and care buildings are part of our work. The estates team’s permit system and infection-control rules come first, and the work is planned around them.

Is Quarter too small for you to travel to?

Not at all: smaller places are covered as well as towns. Our area covers all of Scotland, cities, towns and islands alike. Where we can, we group nearby jobs to make the most of each trip.

Are you insured?

Yes. Our insurance certificate can be sent alongside the quote.

How much does the work cost?

There isn’t a price list, as every site differs. Send photographs or drawings and we’ll price it at a fixed figure.

Can you work to our specification?

Yes. Send it with your enquiry, and the quote will be based on it, flagging anything that needs clarifying.

How do you choose the sealant?

A specification, where there is one, decides it. Without one, the joint decides: its movement, its surfaces and what it has to cope with.

How do I request a quote?

There are four steps: send details, get a quote, we seal, guaranteed. Step one needs little more than photographs and a postcode.

From enquiry to sign-off

Before we leave any area, the masking comes off, the area is cleaned and every joint is checked with your site contact. If an area should be left alone while the sealant cures, we say how long and put signs out. For work around Quarter, we aim for one trip, so photographs, sizes and a full list matter. Outside work also needs a suitable weather window.

  1. The first job is to check each joint: how wide it is, how it moves and why the old seal let go.
  2. A fixed quote follows, naming the sealant and its movement class.
  3. Old sealant and filler are cut out and the joint faces cleaned back to sound material, and we tell you if any edges need repairing first.
  4. We control the depth with backing rod or, in shallow joints, bond-breaker tape.
  5. Primer goes on where the manufacturer specifies it, followed by the sealant, which is then tooled off.
  6. Each joint is inspected and handed over with our 12-month guarantee.

Getting the site ready

  • Point out parking and an unloading spot
  • Send asbestos survey details if the building is pre-2000
  • Confirm the product named in the specification

Ask for a quote

We quote a fixed sum against the scope you give us, so the cost is agreed before work starts. To start the process, call 01277 525 020 or email us.

Surface by surface

Concrete and precast panel joints

Precast and concrete panel joints move daily. The sealant needs the right movement capability and a controlled depth.

Car park decks and ramps

Deck and ramp joints take tyre loads, grit and de-icing salts. We use a sealant made for wheel loads and the expected movement.

Keeping the joints sound

Once the work is signed off, a little attention goes a long way:

  • Clear dirt from joint lines during routine cleaning
  • Keep traffic off new joints until the cure time is up
  • Inspect movement joints alongside other routine building checks
  • Keep racking legs and heavy point loads off floor joints

In warehouses, forklift and pallet-truck routes take the most wear. Keep racking feet and heavy point loads off joint lines and flag chipped arrises before they spread.

An open joint fills with grit, and a joint full of grit can’t close. The arrises crack and break away under the load. Keeping the seal sound avoids all of that.

Work for main contractors and building owners

For main contractors, we work as the sealant subcontractor. We work to your programme, your specification and your site rules.

Blocks and communal areas make up much of the work for housing associations and agents. Work can be phased so residents and staff keep access throughout, with each stage agreed with your site contact.

What affects the price in Quarter

To price the job, we consider:

  • Induction, permit and paperwork requirements
  • Backing rod, priming and other preparation
  • Access and working height
  • How much existing material needs removing

Access often affects the price as much as the sealing: easy-to-reach joints are quicker than those that need equipment to get to. Tell us how the joints are reached and call for a quote.

What we need to price the job

There’s no need for a formal survey. A few details are enough to get going:

  • Access details, including height
  • Asbestos survey details if the building is older
  • Approximate linear metres or a joint schedule
  • The postcode of the building

Let us know the site, the scope and your timescale, and we’ll put a fixed quote together. The easiest way is to call the office on 01277 525 020 or send photos by email.

When to bring in a specialist

What you see is the finished bead, but most of the work is hidden. Backing rod, primer where specified and a joint designed to move with the building are easy to get wrong without experience.

Putting right a botched joint often costs more than sealing it well at the start, since all of it has to come out and the faces be cleaned back again. That’s why many clients bring in a specialist from the beginning.
