FAQs: Palestine

Is a smaller place like Palestine outside your area?

Not at all: smaller places are covered as well as towns. We work across Greater London and the South East. Good photographs up front let us bring everything on the first visit.

Do we have to stop operations in Palestine while the joints are sealed?

In the majority of cases the site keeps working. Joints are done in phases, a bay, aisle or deck at a time. We agree the sequence and timings with you before we start.

Can you send site paperwork?

Tell us what site paperwork you need (RAMS, insurance certificate, CSCS details) and we’ll confirm with the quote.

Are expansion joints and movement joints the same thing?

It’s a deliberate gap that lets the structure move without cracking. Many people call it an expansion joint and both need a flexible seal.

Do you have public liability insurance?

Yes. Mastic Doctor is fully insured, public liability included.

Who decides which product is used?

A specification, where there is one, decides it. Without one, the joint decides: its movement, its surfaces and what it has to cope with.

What if there’s asbestos in the old mastic?

Some older mastics, especially in pre-2000 buildings, can contain asbestos. We check the asbestos register before cutting out old sealant in an older building, and work stops until any suspect material has been tested. Removing asbestos is a job for asbestos specialists, not us.

Expansion joint sealing in Palestine

Internal floor joints take trolleys, pallet trucks and forklifts. Without a sound filler, joint edges chip and spall under load, so the right filler or sealant for the traffic and movement matters. We will tell you if the edges need repairing before sealing, and phased work keeps areas in use. Most enquiries involve water dripping through deck or ramp joints and hardened, cracked sealant on exposed facades, on car park decks and ramps, podiums and floor movement joints and cladding panel joints. Looking for mastic applicators who cover Palestine? We have been sealing commercial buildings since 2005.

Halls, schools and small commercial buildings near places like Palestine have movement joints in brick, block and concrete too. They’re easily forgotten until water gets in or an edge breaks.

The 12-month guarantee is for workmanship rather than wear and tear. Sealant wears with time, and movement, weather, cleaning and use decide how fast, so we’re clear about what is covered before work starts.

Slabs, ramps and loading bays in Palestine

Central London is about 70 miles from Palestine. Distribution warehouses and industrial estates are common around the motorway corridors that serve the capital, and their floor joints take forklift and pallet-truck traffic all day. Palestine sits in one of the drier corners of the country, the South East. External joints still wait for dry conditions, and where de-icing salt is spread in winter, open joints let it in.

For floors and slabs around Palestine, the product is chosen for the traffic and the movement at each joint.

Palestine is in Hampshire. Commercial clients in Palestine use us for work on movement joints, as part of our coverage of Hampshire. 723 places across Hampshire fall within our area, including Palestine. For work in that direction, see our Southampton page, about 20 miles away.

What we are called out for in Palestine

Repeated failure often traces back to the wrong product. A stiff or general-purpose sealant across a joint with large movement won’t cope. Movement capability is set out in BS EN ISO 11600.

Look out for the following:

  • Expansion joints filled with dirt and stones
  • New sealant over old, now failing
  • Joints where the bead has lost adhesion
  • Water getting into the wall through a failed joint

Schools such as Grateley Primary School have movement joints in their walls and floors that are easy to overlook.

What to look for in a quote

  • Will RAMS and insurance details be available?
  • Is the sealant right for the movement and the substrate?
  • Whether old or failed sealant will be cut out, not overlaid
  • Whether primer will be used where the manufacturer specifies it

How to choose a sealant contractor

Why act early in Palestine

Patching the worst lengths of a joint can make sense short term. The remaining sealant is often close to failing too. We can price a patch and a full reseal side by side. One visit to deal with every failing joint makes more sense than several trips to a place like Palestine, rather than one at a time. Send photos of each area and we’ll quote for the lot.

Pricing movement joints depends on quantities, condition and access. Call for a quote.

How a job runs

We bring the products specified for the job, along with primers and backing rod. Any old material is cut back to clean, sound faces, primer goes on where the manufacturer specifies it, and the sealant is tooled off neatly. Smaller jobs around Palestine can be grouped with others nearby. A fixed quote is given before anything starts.

  1. We start with photographs, approximate lengths and any drawings, visiting where needed.
  2. We compare each joint’s width with the movement and the sealant’s capability and tell you if the design looks wrong for the movement.
  3. Every joint is cleared of the failed seal and any grit packed into it.
  4. Edges are checked, and we tell you if any need repairing before sealing.
  5. A sealant suited to the movement and traffic is laid to depth and tooled.
  6. Each area is handed back after its cure time, under our 12-month guarantee.

Advice

What the job involves on each surface

Joints between different materials

Hybrid or MS polymer sealants bond to many substrates. The choice depends on the substrates and how much the joint moves.

Brickwork and blockwork joints

Vertical movement joints in brick and block walls let the masonry grow and shrink. They take a low-modulus sealant with a movement class to suit, with backing rod setting the depth.

Honest limits

Not every problem is a sealant problem, and we’d rather tell you before you spend money. These need a different solution:

  • Joints too narrow for the movement, which need redesigning by the engineer
  • Damaged metal nosings or cover plates over a joint
  • Cracking or settlement that calls for an engineer’s assessment

If you are not sure, just call the office on 01277 525 020 or email drawings and photos and we’ll give you a straight answer.
