How we handle construction mastic in Kames
Refurbishment work needs a slightly different approach from new build. Existing joints have to be stripped back to sound faces, because fresh sealant can’t key into cured silicone and the asbestos survey is checked first on older stock. New and existing joints then get the same preparation. If you are dealing with different trades sealing to different standards and external joints sealed in damp or cold conditions that are now failing, we can put it right, on brick and block movement joints, window and door perimeters and internal decorators’ caulk alike. Looking for mastic applicators who cover Kames? Mastic Doctor has worked for contractors, FMs and building owners since 2005, CHAS accredited and a Constructionline member.
In smaller places such as Kames, building work tends to be single schemes rather than big developments. Exposed elevations in Scotland put facade and perimeter joints to work from day one, so the sealant choice matters.
Our workmanship is guaranteed for 12 months, wherever the site is. If a joint we sealed fails because of how it was installed, we come back and put it right.

How the job changes by surface
Snagging before handover
Snagging is often the final mastic stage. We can work through the snag list area by area, cutting out damaged joints and resealing them properly.
External facade and movement joints
External movement joints often need primer, depending on the substrate. Primer goes on where the sealant maker calls for it, and seal only with a dry joint inside the product’s temperature range.
Kames: questions and answers
Will you fit the mastic around our build programme in Kames?
Yes. The mastic is planned around your key stages. We are CHAS accredited and a Constructionline member, and paperwork such as RAMS is confirmed with the quote.
Is Kames too far out for you?
No. Places such as Kames are covered as much as the big towns. Every Scottish council area is within our area. Where we can, we group nearby jobs to make the most of each trip.
When can you be on site?
The office is staffed Monday to Friday, from 8am until 5pm. Tell us your site hours and access windows and the work will be fitted around them.
Do you take on mastic snagging only?
Yes. Damaged, missed or untidy joints are stripped and done again properly, working to your handover date.
Does weather matter for sealant work?
It can, when the joints are outside. Wet joints and cold, damp or frosty conditions stop the sealant bonding properly, so external work may be moved if conditions aren’t right. Internal work is far less affected.
How long before the joints can be used?
That comes down to the sealant and the temperature. Some products skin over quickly but need longer to cure fully, and we confirm it before leaving site.
What accreditations do you hold?
Our applicators are CSCS-carded, and we hold CHAS accreditation and Constructionline membership. We confirm any paperwork you need with the quote.
Leave it or put it right?
Refurbishments sometimes budget for new windows when the frames are sound and only the seal has failed. Sound frames often need only a new perimeter seal, which is a much smaller cost. We will say so if a frame itself is the problem. Around smaller places like Kames, halls, stores and seasonal buildings may not be checked often, giving water time to get in. Early resealing prevents it.
Cost follows what’s involved: removing old material, preparing the joints, the product, the access and how the work is phased. Call for a quote and we’ll explain how it’s made up.
Why us?
- Colours confirmed for the specified product
- Clear, fixed quotes
- Products installed to the manufacturer’s instructions
- Our applicators hold CSCS cards
When something else is needed
Before quoting, we check that sealant is the right answer. It won’t put right:
- Glazing units that are cracked or misted
- Frame gaps too wide for sealant, which the installer needs to correct
- Approving fire stopping as compliant
If in doubt, call 01277 525 020 or use the quote form and we’ll say what we think before you book.
Surfaces we seal
- Floor and skirting junctions
- Sanitary and kitchen joints
- Cladding and panel joints
- Brick and block movement joints
- Window and door perimeters
- Internal decorators’ caulk
What we are called out for in Kames
On construction sites, joints usually fail early because of when they were sealed, not what was used. If sealant goes in before the last trades are through, it gets knocked, painted over or contaminated.
Look out for the following:
- Frame gaps too wide for sealant alone
- A mastic package split between trades with no clear owner
- Existing joints on a refurb that need cutting out and resealing
- Sanitary sealant damaged by following trades
On any site in or around Kames, the mastic follows the specification and the programme.
Questions to ask before you book
- Whether their applicators hold CSCS cards
- Their public liability cover
- How they handle RAMS and site documents
- Health and safety accreditation such as CHAS
Facades, frames and programmes in Kames
Kames sits close to the coast, within about 1 mile. Schemes this close to the sea see their facade joints tested by wind and rain from the day they’re sealed, so joint design, primers and product choice deserve extra care. Kames is in the west of Scotland, the wetter side of the country. Outside mastic is booked around the forecast, and internal sealing fills the gaps.
Work at a hotel such as Tighnabruaich Hotel, 1 mile north-east of Kames, tends to be programmed around bookings, mastic included.
Kames is about 19 miles west of Greenock, in Argyll and Bute. Across the PA21 postcode area, it works the same way: send details, get a fixed quote, we seal, and the work is guaranteed. Kames is one of 124 places we cover in Argyll and Bute. For work in that direction, see our Glasgow page, about 38 miles away.

Diagnose, treat, sign off
Inspect, seal, sign off: every visit follows that pattern. First comes an inspection and agreement on scope, then the work is carried out to the specified product and detail, and the job ends with a walk round and sign-off. Where we can, we combine work around Kames with other jobs nearby, to make the most of each trip. Tell us how flexible your dates are.
- First we take quantities off the drawings and read through the specification.
- We return a fixed quote that ties the mastic package to your programme.
- Any site paperwork you need (RAMS, insurance certificate, CSCS details) is confirmed with the quote.
- Work follows the programme, area by area, as rooms and elevations become ready.
- Every joint is prepared, set to depth and sealed with the specified product.
- Before handover, snags are dealt with and the package is signed off under our 12-month guarantee.
What we need from you
- For older buildings, check the asbestos register before work
- Let us know about inductions and permits
