Our process
Our CSCS-carded applicators arrive with the sealants, primers and backing rod the job calls for. Joint faces are cleaned back to sound, dry surfaces, primer goes on where the manufacturer specifies it, and each bead is tooled to a neat concave finish. Smaller jobs around Rockbourne can be grouped with others nearby, which keeps travel down. You’ll have a fixed quote before work starts.
- The specification and schedule come first, so we know which details apply.
- Access, permits and the order of areas are agreed with the site team.
- Each opening is checked for wall or floor type, service, gap and depth.
- Unsuitable material is removed and the opening cleaned so the seal starts clean.
- The specified backing and sealant go in to depth and are finished neatly.
- We tell you about openings that need a different product.
Getting the site ready
- Tell us what induction or permit system the site runs
- Explain the parking and delivery arrangements
- Make sure the joints can be reached
Ask for a quote
Specifications, drawings and tender packages are welcome with any enquiry, and we’ll price against exactly what is specified. For smaller jobs, photographs and a description will do.
Advice
Fire stopping for commercial buildings in Rockbourne
Where pipes, cables and other services cross a compartment wall or floor, the opening around them has to be closed so fire and smoke can’t move between compartments. Our part is installing fire-rated and intumescent sealant at those openings and along linear gaps, where the specification calls for it. Each seal follows the manufacturer’s tested detail, not a rule of thumb. We work on linear gaps at wall heads, small duct penetrations where the tested detail allows and cable penetrations, and the failures we are asked to look at most are hidden openings found during inspections and unsealed joints where partitions meet the slab. A single leaking joint is often how a building in Rockbourne first comes to us: we look at the rest while we are there and tell you what we find.
Rural conversions around Rockbourne can put new fire-resisting partitions inside older structures. Where a pipe or cable passes through a fire-resisting wall, the seal must match the tested detail: product, substrate, gap and depth.

Rockbourne: questions and answers
Do you take on work at healthcare sites like Salisbury District Hospital?
Yes. Healthcare sites are among the places we work. We follow the site’s permits, sign-in and infection-control procedures in every area.
Is Rockbourne too far out for you?
No. Small places get the same service as large ones. London and every South East county are within our area. Good photographs up front let us bring everything on the first visit.
How long before the joints can be used?
That comes down to the sealant and the temperature. Some products skin over quickly but need longer to cure fully, and we confirm it before leaving site.
Are you members of a third-party fire-stopping installer scheme?
No, and we’d rather be clear about that. Some clients require third-party installer schemes even though the law doesn’t, so check your contract first. Where it isn’t required, we install the specified sealant to the maker’s details.
What changes on 2 September 2029?
From 2 September 2029, Approved Document B in England drops its references to BS 476 classes. After that, the European classification under BS EN 13501-2 is the route. Product selection stays with your designer.
Is it fine to apply new sealant on top of old?
No. Failed sealant is removed and the faces cleaned back to sound, dry material first, since fresh sealant will not bond reliably to aged material.
What happens if old sealant might contain asbestos?
Asbestos is possible in some older mastics, particularly in buildings from before 2000. We check the asbestos register before cutting out old sealant in an older building, and if asbestos is suspected, work stops until it’s tested. Removing asbestos is a job for asbestos specialists, not us.
Penetration seals near Rockbourne
In England, Approved Document B covers fire stopping of openings and penetrations. From 2 September 2029, BS 476 references are being taken out of Approved Document B, leaving BS EN 13501-2 classification as the route, subject to the Government’s transitional arrangements. We install whatever has been specified, to the product’s tested detail.
Older community buildings such as Church of St Andrew that have been rewired or given new heating can have service gaps through walls worth checking against the specification. Hospital estates such as Salisbury District Hospital (to the north of Rockbourne) are divided into fire compartments, and any service penetration through them should be sealed to the specified, tested detail. Industrial units on estates such as Sandleheath Industrial Estate, 2.3 miles south of Rockbourne, often separate offices from warehouse space with fire-resisting walls, and new services through them need the specified seal.
Rockbourne is in Hampshire. Our applicators travel to Rockbourne for work on service penetrations. Our Hampshire coverage takes in 723 places, from busy centres to rural villages. Southampton is covered too, around 20 miles from Rockbourne.

Work for main contractors and building owners
For main contractors, we work as the sealant subcontractor, on new build and refurbishment alike. Programme, specification and site rules come first.
We work for building owners and managing agents on sealant work across single buildings or whole portfolios. Several sites can go on one quote, so there’s one set of paperwork to deal with.
Different surfaces, different methods
Cables and cable bundles
Cable penetrations are frequently sealed with fire-rated sealant where the detail allows. The detail limits bundle size and the gaps between and around cables and we work within those limits.
Plastic pipes
Plastic waste pipes through slabs come up often. Whether sealant alone is acceptable depends entirely on the tested detail.
When to bring in a specialist
General builders and handymen seal joints, but it isn’t their main trade. A specialist brings correct preparation, depth control with backing rod and a product suited to that particular joint, which is what makes a joint last.
Certain joints really need a specialist: fire-rated seals that must follow a tested detail, trafficked floor joints and external movement joints among them. A poor seal in places like these tends to cost more to put right later.
Why it’s worth doing now in Rockbourne
Inspections and handover checks often pick up fire stopping. Finding unsealed or improvised openings late can hold up a programme which is why earlier is better. One visit to deal with every failing joint makes more sense than several trips to a place like Rockbourne. Send photos of each area and we will quote for the lot.
No two sites price the same: joint size, product, access and site hours all play a part. A fixed quote follows once we understand the job.

What we can’t put right
A few problems need another trade or a different fix, and we point that out rather than sealing over them:
- Reviewing a building’s overall fire safety
- Approving the work on behalf of building control
- Deciding what a wall or floor needs, which belongs to the designer
If in doubt, phone 01277 525 020 or send photos by email and we’ll say what we think.
