Fire stopping for businesses in Poynders End

Send drawings, photos or a joint schedule, or tell us about the site, and we’ll come back with a fixed quote.

Work for main contractors and building owners

Blocks and communal areas make up much of the work for housing associations and agents. We phase the work so people keep access, and each stage is agreed with your contact.

Planned maintenance programmes are welcome: working through a building or an estate in stages that fit your budget. Poynders End can form part of a wider programme across Hertfordshire.

Fire stopping for commercial buildings in Poynders End

Most of our fire stopping work happens after the building is up. Each new cable, pipe or data route cut through a fire-resisting wall leaves an opening behind, and they are easy to forget. Those on your schedule are closed with the specified product. We work on small duct penetrations where the tested detail allows, joints between fire-resisting walls and floors and service gaps in risers, and what we are called in for most is builders’ foam or ordinary silicone in compartment walls and fire-rated sealant that has cracked or shrunk back. A single leaking joint is often how a building in Poynders End first comes to us: we check the joints around it and give you an honest view of what needs doing now and what can wait.

Smaller places such as Poynders End still have buildings with fire-resisting walls and floors: schools, halls, care homes and commercial conversions. If sealant is what the specification names, we install it around the services exactly as the maker’s detail sets out.

Every job we finish is backed by a 12-month workmanship guarantee, in Poynders End as everywhere else we work. If our installation lets you down in that time, we return and fix it.

Poynders End: questions and answers

Is Poynders End too far out for you?

Not at all. Poynders End is within our area. We cover Greater London and the counties of the South East. Good photos up front let us bring everything on the first visit.

How does the move away from BS 476 affect penetration seals in Poynders End?

Approved Document B loses its BS 476 references from 2 September 2029, and BS EN 13501-2 becomes the route, subject to transitional arrangements. Whichever applies, we install the specified product to its tested detail; the specification is for the designer to set.

Do you take on small jobs?

Small jobs are welcome alongside larger packages. Photos and a description are enough to start.

Can you follow the specification on our project?

Yes. Send it with your enquiry, and the quote will be based on it.

Do you seal on top of existing sealant?

No. We cut the old material out and clean the joint back before sealing, since fresh sealant will not bond reliably to aged material.

How much does the work cost?

It depends on the job: the volume of work, the access, the specified product and how it’s phased. Call for a quote.

Can you handle several sites?

Yes. Several buildings can share a single quote, and you deal with one contact throughout.

What we can’t put right

Our job is the joint, not everything around it. On its own, sealant can’t deal with:

  • Issuing fire ratings or certificates for seals
  • Fire risk assessments, a job for a competent assessor
  • Deciding what a wall or floor needs, which belongs to the designer

Not sure which it is? You can give us a call on 01277 525 020 or email us and we’ll tell you honestly before you book.

What we seal

  • Service gaps in risers
  • Joints between fire-resisting walls and floors
  • Linear gaps at wall heads
  • Cable penetrations
  • Small duct penetrations where the tested detail allows
  • Pipe penetrations

Should maintenance staff do it?

Paperwork matters too. Main contractors and clients often ask for CSCS cards, RAMS and insurance details, and our CSCS-carded applicators are used to working under those rules.

What you see is the finished bead, but most of the work is hidden. Backing rod, primer where specified and a joint designed to move with the building are easy to get wrong without experience.

Aftercare for building managers

Keep the joints in good shape with a few simple steps:

  • Foam or ordinary sealant is never a fire-seal repair
  • Check with the data sheet before painting over fire sealant
  • Flag new cables with no seal around them
  • Agree the fire-stopping specification before services go in

Never top up a fire seal with foam, ordinary silicone or filler. A repair should use the original product, installed the same way.

Make reporting new openings part of every permit to work in service areas. It costs little and catches breaches early.

Penetration seals near Poynders End

In England, Approved Document B covers fire stopping of openings and penetrations. From 2 September 2029, BS 476 references are being taken out of Approved Document B, leaving BS EN 13501-2 classification as the route, subject to the Government’s transitional arrangements. We install whatever has been specified, to the product’s tested detail. Poynders End is about 29 miles from central London. Office refits around the commuter belt bring new cabling through fire-resisting walls; the gaps need the specified seal.

Theatres, wards and plant rooms at sites like Lister Hospital (2.7 miles north-east of Poynders End) all have compartment walls crossed by services. Halls and meeting rooms at places like Church of St Martin sometimes gain new services, and any compartment wall crossed needs the specified seal. For a building at a site such as Horizon Technology Park, 2.9 miles east of Poynders End, a check of penetration seals after each fit-out is good practice.

Poynders End is about 3 miles south of Hitchin, in Hertfordshire. Anywhere in SG4, it works the same way: details in, fixed quote out, then sealing and a 12-month guarantee. 371 places across Hertfordshire fall within our area, including Poynders End. We also cover London, some 29 miles away.

How a job runs

Before we leave any area, we remove the tape, clean down and inspect every joint with your site contact. Where the sealant needs time to cure before use, we tell you and sign the area. If others near Poynders End need work, visits can be combined, which keeps travel down. You’ll have a fixed quote before work starts.

  1. We read the specification, drawings or penetration schedule you send.
  2. On site, each opening is checked against the tested detail it is meant to follow.
  3. Anything that doesn’t belong in the opening, such as expanding foam or general-purpose filler, is removed.
  4. We fit the backing the detail asks for, to the stated depth.
  5. We apply the specified sealant to the depth and around the services as the detail shows.
  6. Openings that need a collar, wrap, batt or other product are flagged to you rather than filled with sealant.

Before we start on site

  • Let us know about inductions and permits
  • For older buildings, check the asbestos register before work
  • Arrange parking or a loading space
