About our fire stopping in New England
Sealant is the specified answer for plenty of openings, such as metal pipes, cables and some small ducts where the detail covers them. Other openings need collars, wraps, batts, pillows or boards. We use sealant where it is the specified product, and we tell you when a detail calls for something else. If you have builders’ foam or ordinary silicone in compartment walls and openings left by services added after handover, we can put it right. A single leaking joint is often how a building in New England first comes to us: we check the joints around it and give you an honest view of what needs doing now and what can wait.
A job near New England is typically planned around one visit, so send the specification and photos first. Design and sign-off belong to the designer or building control; we install what’s specified.
Whoever the client is, the cover is the same: a 12-month guarantee on our workmanship. Faults in the structure, damage and other trades’ work fall outside it, and we say so plainly.

Our process
In a busy building, the work is phased so only one area is out of use at a time. Each section is protected, cleaned back and sealed, then reopened once the sealant allows before we move to the next. Rural sites near New England may need directions, gate codes or a contact on site. Add it to your enquiry and we will build it into the plan.
- We read the specification, drawings or penetration schedule you send and ask about anything unclear.
- On site, each opening is checked against the tested detail it is meant to follow.
- Unsuitable fillers and loose debris are taken out of each opening.
- We fit the backing the detail asks for, to the stated depth.
- Fire-rated or intumescent sealant is gunned in to the specified depth, then tooled.
- If an opening needs something other than sealant, we tell you instead of improvising.
Getting the site ready
- Warn occupants and staff about the work
- Share your working hours and any access restrictions
- Point out any areas we must not close

Work for main contractors and building owners
Blocks and communal areas make up much of the work for housing associations and agents. We phase the work so people keep access, with each stage agreed with your site contact.
Hospitality, education, healthcare, office and retail clients book us directly too. We plan around the way the building is used, so guests, pupils, patients or staff are disturbed as little as possible.
Honest limits
Not every problem is a sealant problem, and we’re upfront when that’s the case. These need a different solution:
- Walls or floors that aren’t fire-resisting to begin with
- Reviewing a building’s overall fire safety
- Writing the fire-stopping specification
If in doubt, call the office on 01277 525 020 or email a schedule or drawings and we will say what we think.
Surfaces we seal
- Service gaps in risers
- Small duct penetrations where the tested detail allows
- Cable penetrations
- Joints between fire-resisting walls and floors
- Pipe penetrations
- Linear gaps at wall heads
Common questions from New England clients
Will you take on work at estates like Blois Meadow Business Centre, close to New England?
Yes. Estates, retail parks and business parks around New England, Blois Meadow Business Centre among them, are all within reach. A few photographs and the unit address let us price the work.
Is a smaller place like New England outside your area?
Not at all. New England is within our area. Our area covers London and the South East counties. Where we can, we group nearby jobs to make the most of each trip.
What if there’s asbestos in the old mastic?
Some older mastics, especially in pre-2000 buildings, can contain asbestos. Before we disturb old sealant in an older building, we ask to see the asbestos register or survey, and work stops until any suspect material has been tested. Removing asbestos is a job for asbestos specialists, not us.
What will the job cost?
Every job gets its own fixed quote. To get one, call 01277 525 020 or send details through our quote form with a description of the work.
Can you tell us what fire stopping our building needs?
No. Deciding what is needed sits with the designer, fire engineer and building control. Our role is installing what they specify, to the product’s tested detail.
Do you have third-party installer accreditation for fire stopping?
No. We are not members of a third-party fire-stopping installer scheme. Our credentials are CHAS accreditation, Constructionline membership and CSCS-carded applicators, and we are fully insured. If your contract requires third-party installer certification, we’re not the right fit for that package.
Do you take on multi-site work?
Yes. Multi-site work and planned programmes are a core part of the service, planned site by site to suit how each building is used.
When to call us in New England
Some service penetrations were never sealed at all. They come to light during inspections, refits or when another trade lifts a tile.
What tends to prompt an enquiry:
- Non-fire-rated filler around services
- Unsealed openings around new pipes and cables
- Hidden openings found during inspections
- Seals that don’t match their tested detail
In a building such as Church of St Leonard, any service penetration through a fire-resisting wall should be sealed to the specified detail.
What your quote should include
- What site paperwork they can supply
- Whether their applicators hold CSCS cards
- Health and safety accreditation such as CHAS
- How the existing material will be dealt with
Compartments and services around New England
At about 46 miles from central London, New England is within reach of the capital. Business park offices in the commuter belt are refitted as tenants change, and each fit-out adds services through compartment walls, and the gaps need sealing with the specified product. In England, Approved Document B covers fire stopping of openings and penetrations. From 2 September 2029, BS 476 references are being taken out of Approved Document B, leaving BS EN 13501-2 classification as the route, subject to the Government’s transitional arrangements. Our part stays the same: the specified product, installed to its tested detail.
Office fit-outs on sites such as Blois Meadow Business Centre, 1.8 miles to the south-west of New England, add cabling and pipework through fire-resisting walls, and fire-rated sealant goes in where the specification calls for it.

We work on buildings around Haverhill Railway Walks. Other landmarks nearby include Clare Castle (4.2 miles east) and Haverhill and District Local History Centre (2.5 miles north-west).
Should maintenance staff do it?
Putting right a botched joint often costs more than sealing it well at the start, since all of it has to come out and the faces be cleaned back again. That’s why many clients bring in a specialist from the beginning.
There’s also the paperwork. Many sites expect CSCS cards, RAMS and proof of insurance, and we will confirm the paperwork you need with the quote.

What happens if it’s left?
Leave a penetration open and smoke and fire can cross into the next compartment far earlier than intended. While the openings can be reached, sealing them is normally straightforward. Left until ceilings are closed or a tenant moves in, the same work costs more access and more disruption. Older rural buildings around New England move with the seasons, and rigid or tired sealant can’t keep up. The right product, sized to the joint, copes much better.
Pricing service penetrations depends on how many there are, their condition and the access. Ask us for a fixed quote.
