What we can’t put right
Sealant solves a lot, but not everything, and we are upfront when that’s the case. These need a different solution:
- Fire risk assessments, a job for a competent assessor
- Plastic pipes whose detail calls for a collar or wrap
- Gaps in walls that were never built as compartment walls
If in doubt, phone 01277 525 020 or send details through our quote form and we will say what we think.
Joints and surfaces we work on
- Small duct penetrations where the tested detail allows
- Linear gaps at wall heads
- Cable penetrations
- Pipe penetrations
- Service gaps in risers
- Joints between fire-resisting walls and floors
About our fire stopping in Herongate
Every service that crosses a compartment wall or floor leaves an opening, and that opening needs sealing to hold back fire and smoke. Our job is fitting fire-rated and intumescent sealant at those service penetrations, and along linear gaps, where it is the specified product. Each seal follows the manufacturer’s tested detail. We work on joints between fire-resisting walls and floors, small duct penetrations where the tested detail allows and service gaps in risers, and the usual reasons a site gets in touch are old intumescent sealant that has split away and penetration schedules that need working through. Sealant applicators who only do sealant are a different proposition from a general trade with a gun in the van: in Herongate, that means joint design, primers and backing rod as standard.
Smaller places such as Herongate still have buildings with fire-resisting walls and floors: schools, halls, care homes and commercial conversions. Any service penetration through those walls should be closed with the specified product, set out as its test evidence shows.
A 12-month guarantee applies to all our work. Should something we installed fail, give us a call on 01277 525 020 or email the details over and we will come back to it.

What the job involves on each surface
Linear joints
Head-of-wall gaps, slab edges and wall junctions are linear joints. BS EN 1366-4 testing sets the joint widths, depths, backing and movement a seal covers and the installation has to fit inside those limits.
Plastic pipes
Plastic pipes soften and collapse in a fire. Small sizes are sometimes covered by an intumescent sealant detail, but many need a collar or wrap. We check the pipe material and diameter against the detail before we start.
Questions about Herongate
Is Brentwood Commercial Park, near Herongate, within your area?
Yes. Our area takes in Herongate and its surroundings, with estates and business parks such as Brentwood Commercial Park included. A few photos and the unit address let us price the work.
Is Herongate off your patch?
No. Places such as Herongate are covered as much as the big towns. Our area covers London and the South East counties. Good photos up front let us bring everything on the first visit.
Do you offer coloured sealant?
It depends on the product specified. Some ranges offer many colours, others very few, so the available colours are confirmed with the quote.
Is it fine to apply new sealant on top of old?
No. Overlaying old sealant is a frequent cause of early failure, so it all comes out first.
Is fire stopping in Scotland covered by different guidance?
Building standards in Scotland are separate from England’s. Either way, we install the specified sealant to its tested detail.
Do you have public liability insurance?
Yes. We are fully insured, and the certificate can go with your quote.
Will you quote for a small job?
Small jobs are welcome alongside larger packages. Photos and a description are enough to start.
Work for main contractors and building owners
Agents, factors and owners’ representatives all follow the same route: send the details, accept a fixed quote, and we carry out and guarantee the work. We can agree access arrangements and keyholder contacts beforehand.
Housing associations and managing agents often need work done across blocks and communal areas. We phase the work so people keep access, and each stage is agreed with your contact.
When to call us in Herongate
Some seals fail because the wrong product went in: builders’ foam or ordinary silicone used to fill a hole. The opening looks sealed but has no fire test evidence behind it, so it has to come out.
Typical triggers for a call:
- Openings found when ceilings come down for a refit
- Seals that don’t match their tested detail
- Snag lists that include open service penetrations
- Open linear gaps along the top of fire-resisting walls
Schools such as Brentwood County High School often have new data and services installed during holidays, and penetrations through fire-resisting walls should be checked afterwards.

Fire-rated sealing for Herongate buildings
For England, the fire stopping of penetrations is dealt with in Approved Document B. From 2 September 2029, BS 476 references are being taken out of Approved Document B, leaving BS EN 13501-2 classification as the route, subject to the Government’s transitional arrangements. What we install is set by the specification, and it goes in to the tested detail. At about 20 miles from central London, Herongate is within reach of the capital. Offices around the capital are refitted often, and the cabling that follows can breach fire-resisting walls.
Wherever services are added at a hospital such as Brentwood Community Hospital, 2.4 miles to the north-west of Herongate, the compartment line has to be made good with the specified product. Halls and meeting rooms at places like St Andrew's Church sometimes gain new services, and any compartment wall crossed needs the specified seal.
Herongate is about 3 miles south-east of Brentwood, in Essex. Any commercial site in Herongate is covered, whether it’s a single job or part of a planned programme. We work across 644 places in Essex. There’s a separate page for London, roughly 20 miles from Herongate.

Diagnose, treat, sign off
Our CSCS-carded applicators arrive with the sealants, primers and backing rod the job calls for. Any old material is cut back to clean, sound faces, the manufacturer’s primer is applied where it’s called for, and each bead is tooled to a neat concave finish. For work around Herongate, we aim to finish in one visit, so photos and measurements up front really help. Then the right materials arrive with us.
- First we confirm the product and tested details named in the specification.
- We sort the openings by the detail each one needs.
- Old or wrong materials are cut out.
- Where the detail needs backing, it goes in at the stated depth.
- Fire-rated or intumescent sealant goes in around the services and is tooled off.
- Completed areas are checked with you, with the records agreed when we quoted.
Preparing the site
- Send asbestos survey details if the building is pre-2000
- Tell staff and tenants when we’ll be in
- Have the specification and drawings to hand
Request a quote
Send us photos, drawings or a joint schedule and a fixed quote comes back to you. Where a site visit makes more sense, we’ll arrange one.
Advice
Looking after the joints
For the best life from the joints:
- Treat an open penetration as a priority repair
- Leave fire sealant to cure fully before covering it
- Put resealing into every M&E and fit-out package
- Don’t let anyone top up a fire seal with the wrong product
New services after handover are a common way fire stopping gets breached. A short check at the end of each job saves a long hunt later.
Looking at service areas on a regular cycle pays off. A cracked or disturbed seal found early is a small job; found late, it can be one of many.
