Need fire stopping in Gossops Green?

Photos, a specification or a quick description of the joints is enough to start a fixed quote.

Our process

Inspect, seal, sign off: that’s the shape of every visit. We inspect the joints and confirm what’s in scope, then we prepare and seal each joint with the specified product, and we finish with a walk round so the work can be signed off. Work in places the size of Gossops Green is planned as a single visit where we can. Photos with rough sizes let us arrive with everything needed.

  1. First we go through the drawings, schedule or specification for the seals and ask about anything unclear.
  2. On site, each opening is checked against the tested detail it is meant to follow.
  3. Unsuitable fillers and loose debris are taken out of each opening.
  4. We fit the backing the detail asks for, to the stated depth.
  5. Fire-rated or intumescent sealant is gunned in to the specified depth, then tooled.
  6. Openings that need a collar, wrap, batt or other product are flagged to you rather than filled with sealant.

What we need from you

  • Make sure the joints can be reached
  • Have the specification and drawings to hand
  • For older buildings, check the asbestos register before work

Every quote starts with the facts: what’s there, how much of it, how we reach it and what’s specified. Send what you have, and we’ll arrange a site visit if anything is unclear.

How we handle fire stopping in Gossops Green

The test standards are BS EN 1366-3 for penetration seals and BS EN 1366-4 for linear joints. That classification, such as EI 60 or EI 120, belongs to the product in its tested arrangement. Reproducing the tested arrangement on site is the part we take care of. Site teams most often ask us about seals that don’t match their tested detail and unsealed penetrations discovered above suspended ceilings, on small duct penetrations where the tested detail allows, joints between fire-resisting walls and floors and pipe penetrations. A specialist sealant contractor works differently from a general builder: in Gossops Green, that means joint design, primers and backing rod as standard.

Buildings in a smaller place such as Gossops Green that need fire-rated sealing are typically schools, care homes, surgeries, small offices and flats over shops. Specified fire-rated sealant goes around new services there, built to match the manufacturer’s detail.

What our 12-month guarantee covers is the way we did the job: preparation, application and finish. It doesn’t extend to damage, other trades’ later work or movement the joint was never designed to take.

Work for main contractors and building owners

For main contractors, we work as the sealant subcontractor on new-build and refurbishment projects. Programme, specification and site rules come first, and our applicators hold CSCS cards.

Hospitality, education, healthcare, office and retail clients book us directly too. The work is planned around how the building runs, so guests, pupils, patients or staff are disturbed as little as possible.

What sealant work can’t fix

We seal joints; we don’t mend everything behind them. Sealant alone won’t deal with:

  • Gaps in walls that were never built as compartment walls
  • Approving the work on behalf of building control
  • Fire doors, dampers or other fire safety equipment

Not sure which it is? You can call the office on 01277 525 020 or send details through our quote form and we will tell you honestly before you book.

Joints and surfaces we work on

  • Joints between fire-resisting walls and floors
  • Linear gaps at wall heads
  • Pipe penetrations
  • Small duct penetrations where the tested detail allows
  • Cable penetrations
  • Service gaps in risers

Surface by surface

Plastic pipes

Plastic pipes soften and collapse in a fire. Some intumescent sealants are tested on smaller plastic pipes. We check the pipe material and diameter against the detail before we start.

Linear joints

Head-of-wall joints often have to absorb slab deflection. We use the product and backing the detail names for that movement, with no gaps along the run.

Compartment walls and floors in Gossops Green

Gossops Green has two care or nursing homes no more than 2 miles away. Where new services have gone through compartment walls in a care setting, the gaps need the specified product. We install fire-rated sealant to the tested detail where it is specified. The area within 2 miles of Gossops Green holds plenty of hotels. Bedroom-to-corridor walls in hotels are normally fire-resisting, so new cabling or pipework through them has to be sealed to the tested detail.

For a hospital such as Crawley Hospital, less than half a mile to the north-east of Gossops Green, penetration sealing is normally phased ward by ward, with infection-control rules agreed first. On estates like Denvale Trade Park, 1.1 miles to the east of Gossops Green, the wall between office and warehouse is often fire-resisting, and cables through it need the specified seal.

Gossops Green is about 1 mile west of Crawley, in West Sussex. Our applicators travel to Gossops Green for work on service penetrations. Gossops Green is one of 373 places in West Sussex on our list for service penetrations. Our Brighton page has more on work in that area.

Anyone looking for fire stopping in RH11 and RH10 gets the same process as the rest of our area: send details, get a quote, we seal, guaranteed. What we’re called out for in Gossops Green

A common fault is a product that was never fire-rated in the first place: expanding foam or a general-purpose sealant pushed into a gap to tidy it. The opening looks sealed but has no fire test evidence behind it and has to be removed.

Site and facilities staff are often the first to spot these:

  • Old intumescent sealant that has split away
  • Builders’ foam or ordinary silicone in compartment walls
  • Unsealed penetrations discovered above suspended ceilings
  • Seals that don’t match their tested detail

Workshops and IT rooms at colleges like Crawley College (1.1 miles east of Gossops Green) are re-serviced often, leaving penetrations to seal.

Questions to ask before you book

  • Will failed sealant be removed rather than covered?
  • Which product they’ll use, and why it suits the joint
  • Whether their applicators hold CSCS cards
  • The terms of the workmanship guarantee

Choosing a commercial sealant contractor

General trades versus a specialist

A short, simple internal joint is often within reach of a maintenance team. The usual problems come from preparation: new sealant over old, damp or dusty faces, or the wrong product for the movement.

Certain joints really need a specialist: fire-rated seals that must follow a tested detail, trafficked floor joints and external movement joints among them. Getting these wrong typically costs more in the end than doing them right.

Your questions answered

Can you work in a care home near Gossops Green with residents in?

Yes. Care settings are planned area by area, at times agreed with the home. Tell us about any infection-control or safeguarding requirements and we’ll work to them.

Do you take on work at healthcare sites like Crawley Hospital?

Yes. We work in healthcare settings as well as offices and schools. Before anything starts, the estates team agrees permits, inductions and infection-control measures with us.

What site paperwork can you supply?

Let us know which documents the site needs, such as RAMS, an insurance certificate or CSCS details, and we will confirm them with the quote.

Is fire stopping in Scotland covered by different guidance?

Our work covers Greater London, the South East and every Scottish council area. In Scotland, clause 2.1.14 of the non-domestic Technical Handbook says service penetrations should keep at least the fire resistance of the wall or floor.

Do you design or specify fire stopping?

No, that isn’t our role. With the designer’s details in hand, we can price the sealant elements, and tell you if a detail needs another product.

Do you hold third-party fire-stopping installer certification?

No. We are not members of a third-party fire-stopping installer scheme. We are CHAS accredited and a Constructionline member, and our applicators are CSCS-carded. If your contract requires third-party installer certification, we are not the right fit for that package.

How soon can the area be used again?

We’ll confirm how long the chosen product needs to cure, and flag anything to keep off until it has cured.
