Why kitchen joints matter
A commercial kitchen is wet, hot and cleaned hard every day. Joints between worktops and walls, around sinks and wash-up stations, along splashbacks and at wall bases take water, grease and chemicals constantly. Once a joint opens up, food debris and moisture collect behind it, which is hard to clean and easy for an inspector to spot. Smooth, sealed joints help a kitchen keep its surfaces easy to clean, and environmental health officers check cleanability when they visit.
We reseal kitchens, bars and customer washrooms for restaurants, cafés, pubs, contract caterers and hotel kitchens, through our washroom and wet-area sealing and wider commercial sealant work.
Typical joints
- Stainless steel and solid worktops where they meet walls
- Sinks, pot wash and wash-up stations
- Splashbacks and hygienic wall cladding joints
- Wall-to-floor junctions where sealant is the specified finish
- Bar tops and back bars
- Customer and staff washrooms
Hygienic products
Where food contact is possible, food-safe or hygienic sealants are used; in other wet joints, sanitary silicone with anti-mould additives is the usual choice. All old sealant is removed and the joint must be clean, degreased and dry before resealing, so in a working kitchen we plan time for cleaning and drying as well as sealing. We’ll confirm the products for each area with the quote. Our guide to hygienic sealing in commercial kitchens explains the choices.
Working around service
Service is when the kitchen pays its way, so we schedule sealing for times when the stations involved are idle. Tell us your service times, deep-clean days and access windows and we’ll plan around them. Larger kitchens can be phased, sealing one section while the rest keeps cooking, and each area is handed back once the product has cured enough to be cleaned and used. Customer washrooms can be taken in turn so one always stays open.
Fire-rated sealing after a refit
Kitchen refits often bring new pipework and cabling through fire-resisting walls. Where fire-rated sealant is specified for those penetrations, we install it to the product’s tested detail (fire-rated sealing). Duct openings often need products other than sealant, and we’ll tell you if a detail calls for something else.
Customer washrooms
For many diners, the toilets are the only part of the back of house they see, and a mouldy or peeling bead around a basin or urinal says something about the kitchen too. Washroom joints are resealed with sanitary anti-mould silicone after the old sealant is removed in full, and the work is phased so a facility stays open during trading.
What affects the quote
Price is driven by total joint length, the amount of failed sealant to strip, the products each area needs, access, and how finely the work must be split around service. Restaurants & kitchens: common questions
Do you use food-safe sealant?
Where food contact is possible, yes: we use food-safe or hygienic sealants in those areas.
Will the kitchen have to close?
Usually not entirely. Work is phased around your service times so stations come out of use one section at a time.
How soon can a resealed worktop be used?
That depends on the product and conditions. We tell you before work starts when each area can be cleaned and used.
Can you reseal customer toilets as well?
Yes. Customer and staff washrooms can be added, phased so one stays open.
Do you work for restaurant groups with several sites?
Yes. We can quote per restaurant or as one programme across your sites in South East England, Greater London and Scotland, with the same products and standards at each.
