Common questions from Shalstone clients
Is Shalstone too small for you to travel to?
Not at all: smaller places are covered as well as towns. We cover Greater London and the counties of the South East. Good photographs up front let us bring everything on the first visit.
Is a hospital such as Brackley Community Hospital somewhere you can work?
Yes, healthcare and care buildings are part of our work. Before anything starts, the estates team agrees permits, inductions and infection-control measures with us.
Can one quote cover more than one building?
Yes. Multi-site work and planned programmes are a core part of the service, with each site phased to suit its occupants.
How long will the joint resealing take?
That depends on joint lengths, widths, access and how much old sealant or filler needs removing. As a guide, it usually takes a short visit for a handful of joints, or several days or more for a car park deck or long runs of facade joints.
Will you just go over the old sealant?
No. We cut the old material out and clean the joint back before sealing, because fresh silicone will not bond with aged silicone.
Is colour matching possible?
In many cases, yes. Sealants are made in a wide range of standard colours, and matching to RAL references or nearby finishes is commonly requested. We confirm what’s available for the specified product when we quote.
Do you hold CHAS accreditation?
Yes. CHAS accredited, Constructionline member, and our applicators hold CSCS cards.
Expansion joint sealing for commercial buildings in Shalstone
We have been sealing expansion and movement joints for over 20 years. Our applicators are CSCS-carded, we’re CHAS accredited and a Constructionline member, and we carry five million pounds of public liability insurance. Workmanship is backed by our 12-month guarantee. Site teams most often ask us about sealant pulling off the joint face and rain penetration at brick or block movement joints, across brickwork movement joints, car park decks and ramps and blockwork control joints. A single leaking joint is often how a building in Shalstone first comes to us: we check the joints around it and give you an honest view of what needs doing now and what can wait.
Smaller community and commercial buildings around Shalstone have their own movement joints in walls and floors. They tend to be overlooked until something leaks or cracks.
The 12-month guarantee is for workmanship rather than wear and tear. How long a sealant joint lasts depends on movement, exposure, cleaning and use, so we spell out the cover before we begin.

Cladding panel joints
Cladding panels move more than masonry as they heat and cool. A sealant with the right movement class is chosen in a colour confirmed for that product.
Concrete and precast panel joints
Precast and concrete panel joints move daily. We use a sealant classed for the movement, laid over backing to depth.

Traffic, movement and joints around Shalstone
Shalstone is in the South East, one of the UK’s drier regions. Even so, yard and car park joints are only sealed when they’re dry and clean, while winter salting gets into any joint left open. Shalstone is about 55 miles from central London. The roads out of London are lined with trade parks and distribution sheds, and their floor joints take forklift and pallet-truck traffic all day.
Hospital campuses such as Brackley Community Hospital, 3.4 miles west of Shalstone, grow in stages, leaving movement joints wherever new blocks meet old.
Shalstone is in Buckinghamshire. If you are looking for expansion joint sealing in Shalstone, we can help, as we do across Buckinghamshire. Shalstone is one of 308 places we cover in Buckinghamshire for movement joints. Oxford is covered too, some 20 miles away.

Our process
Working in a building that stays open takes some planning. The work area is signed and kept contained, with routes through the building left open and work section by section so the rest of the building stays in use. For a building around Shalstone, tell us how to find it and who will meet us. Add it to your enquiry and we will build it into the plan.
- The first job is to check each joint: how wide it is, how it moves and why the old seal let go.
- A fixed quote follows, naming the sealant and its movement class.
- We strip out the old seal and prepare the faces, flagging any broken edges that need repair before sealing.
- Backing rod goes in at the right depth, or bond-breaker tape where the joint is shallow.
- After any primer the maker requires, the bead is applied and tooled so it grips two sides only.
- Finished joints are checked and backed by our 12-month guarantee.

Advice
After the work
Every sealant joint needs some looking after, and how long they last depends on how they’re treated. We suggest:
- Treat a small split as a warning, not a cosmetic issue
- Look over external and deck joints after a hard winter
- Raise snow-clearing blades over deck joints where possible
- Clear dirt from joint lines during routine cleaning
Fresh joint sealant needs its full cure time before it takes traffic or water. How long that takes depends on the product, the temperature and the depth of the joint, and we confirm it for each area before we leave. Keeping the area coned off until then avoids tyre marks and damage.
A failed deck joint lets water straight through to the level below. Salty water dripping through stains soffits and lands on parked vehicles, which is bad news for the concrete and the people parking below. Sealing the joint promptly stops it at source.
What we’re called out for in Shalstone
Repeated failure often traces back to the wrong product. A stiff or general-purpose sealant across a joint with large movement won’t cope. Movement capability is set out in BS EN ISO 11600, and specifications often refer to it.
If one of these sounds familiar, it’s time for a closer look:
- Rain penetration at brick or block movement joints
- Car park joints leaking onto vehicles below
- Chipped joint edges on forklift routes
- Layers of sealant in a movement joint
For estates staff at a university like University of Buckingham, 4.2 miles to the south-east of Shalstone, building and paving joints are part of the planned maintenance list.

When something else is needed
Sealant solves a lot, but not everything, and we are upfront when that’s the case. It won’t fix:
- Waterproofing layers buried beneath the sealant
- A joint that has to be widened or re-detailed before it can work
- Damaged metal nosings or cover plates over a joint
If in doubt, ring 01277 525 020 or use the quote form and we will say what we think.
